Finding Your Passion

love my job"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." - Dr. Howard Thurman

I love this quote, and I share it often. Recently I heard it referenced in an interview with author and spiritual teacher Elizabeth Lesser, co-founder of the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. Lesser shared the profound impact this quote had on her early in her adult life. She had been raised in a family of social activists, and felt a certain amount of pressure to live up to their high standards for "saving the world."

Hearing the quote from Dr. Howard Thurman, one of Dr. Martin Luther King's teachers, was an "a ha moment" for Elizabeth Lesser. She said in the interview, "Unless you do something from your genuine passionate self, it won't help anyone anyway. There is nothing worse than an angry peace activist. It has to come from a calm inner place before it's going to make an impact." She said the quote was a "swinging door" that enabled her to link her desire to help the world with her desire to heal herself.

What makes you come alive? Do you know? If you don't know, isn't it time you found out?

When we discover and live in alignment with our true passions, whole new worlds open up for us. How much more energy and excitement for life can you have if every day you are doing what makes your soul sing? And how many more people can you positively influence if your soul is alive with joy and love? The more you focus on what you love, the more your brain releases positive, stress-reducing hormones and neurotransmitters that help you think more clearly and stay in that positive state. By focusing your attention on your passions, you are literally creating new neural pathways in your brain that will make you more likely to return to that passionate, optimistic state in the future.

In the past few months, I've had conversations with several people, including a few clients, who are dealing with job eliminations or layoffs. Those who are coping most effectively are seeing the job loss as an opportunity to try something they really love. Some are writing books, starting a small business, or applying for jobs in a completely different field that they've always wanted to try. Some have commented they didn't realize how much they weren't enjoying their jobs until they were forced to leave them. They are discovering the positive power that connecting to their passions can have in their lives.

So, if you don't know what you are passionate about, how do you find out? One way is to hire me as your coach. My coaching relationships begin with an in depth assessment and a foundation conversation that helps you discover what is deeply important to you - your vision, your values, your strengths and your passions.

With each subsequent session, we focus on specific action steps to help you achieve your vision and goals, and live in alignment with your values and passions, reflecting on your accomplishments and what you are learning along the way. After each coaching session, I provide a written follow-up plan that summarizes what you've committed to and outlines next steps.
