Are You Living in Alignment With Your Values?
One of the many silver linings I see in the current economic downturn is my own renewed focus on what is "really important." I've spoken to many people in the past several weeks who echo that sentiment. When we hear news every day of people who have lost their jobs or their homes or their retirement savings, our own minor struggles don't seem so bad. Being clear about what is most important to you is a great gift to give to yourself. If we aren't clear about what we value, we tend to react to circumstances rather than making choices that allow us to live a life of fulfillment. I have had several opportunities recently to work with both individuals and groups on clarifying and sharing their values. As always, the exercise was both affirming and eye-opening to everyone who participated. Some clients didn't realize how important certain things were to them until taking the time to think about them. Others discovered they weren't living in alignment with all of their values and committed to taking steps toward greater alignment. And still others felt a great sense of satisfaction as they realized how much they truly are living in alignment. So what are your core values? If you aren't quite sure, I highly recommend you take the time to find out. The Values Clarification tool (see Quick Links) is one way to help you discover the values that are most important to you. Once you come up with your top five or six values, ask yourself, "How well am I doing at living in alignment with these?" When we are living in alignment with our values, we feel an internal "rightness," or harmony. When we orient our lives around our values, our chances of experiencing life to the fullest are greatly enhanced. Taking time to clarify your core values is a great way to wrap up the closing year and start the new one in a positive direction. I hope you'll take the time to give this gift to yourself. I wish you and yours a holiday season filled with love, laughter, and a strong connection to what matters most. All the best,
Kathy
