Global BRIEF Immigration Alert |  June 6, 2010

Pro-Link GLOBAL Corporate Immigration GLOBAL Brief

HONG KONG | Limited Same Day Approval for In Country Applications

Effective 1 June 2010, the Hong Kong Immigration Department (HKID) has introduced a cap on the number of in-country applications, including extension of stay applications, that it will process on a same day basis.
What's Changed?

Previously, applications for the following categories could be processed on a same day basis:

  • Change of Status
  • Change of Sponsorship
  • Extension of Stay
  • Interim Visa Extensions
  • Endorsement Transfers
  • Multiple Entry Permits
  • New Born Baby Endorsements

Effective immediately, same day processing will be available for a maximum of 345 applications per day: 195 applications made by walk-in appointment and 150 online applications.

Any applications made after this cap has been reached each day will be processed on the next working day and will go towards the next day's maximum limit of same-day applications.
Adjusted Timing

Pro-Link GLOBAL therefore advises all our clients that they should allow at least 2-3 working days government processing time for all applications in categories listed above.  Of course, sufficient lead time for application preparation should also be factored in - we recommend that extensions of stay for Hong Kong are initiated with us at least four weeks in advance.
ACTION ITEMS FOR EMPLOYERS

  • Note that government processing for in-country applications, including extension of stay, will no longer be guaranteed on a same day basis.  An estimated processing time of 2-3 working days should be planned for.
