| Winter Solstice |
Winter Solstice marks the first day of Winter in the northern hemisphere--the beginning of the sun's journey northward, as well as the shortest day of the year. The solstice is a turning point at which light triumphs over dark and the days gradually begin to get longer.
For people of the ancient world, the gradual return of the light signified by the winter solstice was a time of celebration and affirmation bringing the promise of Spring and new light.
Although many traditions are celebrated in specific ways during this time, they tend to be characterized by rituals of bringing back or acknowledging the light. Consider celebrating the winter solstice with family and friends, which falls on December 21 this year. This is the season when animals hibernate and nature sleeps. Therefore, make time to honor the darkness and spend quiet time focused inward. It's a natural time of letting go, releasing resentments or regrets into the darkness, knowing they will be transformed.
After you release and reflect on the year that is ending, you can also celebrate the return of the light and hope for a bright future by declaring your intentions for the New Year.
What are you ready to "inaugurate" for the new year?

| Mineral Musings |
|
2009 will be a Mineral Year. In the Dagara* cosmology, mineral is the element of purpose, communication and story-telling. It is associated with memory, particularly remembering your purpose in life; what you've come to do. Rocks, shells, crystals and bones are typical mineral objects. It is sometimes said that we carry the memories in our bones. The color for mineral is white.

Individuals whose birth year ends in 4 or 9 are mineral people. I am a mineral person and what I've found is that during mineral years, such as '54 or '79, every lesson is profound and every blessing is magnified. All my experiences are intensified and accelerated, so that I count mineral years among the best years of my life. Perhaps, it's because I am living my purpose more passionately. That said, I expect magnificent, magical and memorable life experiences in 2009!

And how about you? What are you declaring for yourself, your family, business or career in 2009?
How will you live your purpose in 2009?

| A Retrospective
2008 was a year of change and discovery! Having retired from City of Oakland employment at the end of January, I enthusiastically embarked on the adventure of entrepreneurship---and what a shift in consciousness that has been!
I've discovered a different world of training, terminology and technology, plus myriad talented buiness owners. From Rejuventate Your Practice to the Millionaire Mind Intensive and Enlightened Warrior Training Camp where resources about attracting clients, program packaging and marketing were shared---to the Expressive Arts for Healing and Social Change Certificate Program where I'm immersed in person-centered expressive arts counseling practices---to the Holistic Chamber of Oakland, where spirit-based entrepreneurs are networking, I'm growing as a new business owner.
My ongoing participation with the EBCRS Health & Wellness Ministry, the Women's Initiative for Self-Employment Graduate Leadership Council, the Offerings Money Circle and The Village has been equally enriching.
On a more personal note, my father is doing well at the Waters Edge Skilled Nursing Facility where he's been for a year. He has good days and less than good days, but overall he's maintaining his own. Edward Malvin is completing his studies in Social Welfare at UCB later this month. He expects to have an outstanding indoor track & field season Jan-Mar, through which he aspires to earn sponsorship to continue high-jumping. He'll participate in UCB's formal graduation ceremony in May 2009. The entire family is currently engaged in making decisions about the disposition of our family home. So again, it's been a transformational year.
Finally, I want to share some women-owned enterprises for you to do business with:
Jeanette Madden Graphic Design &
Artiste Extraordinaire
Carribbean-inspired oasis of pampering
Gwendolyn Harrison
Honoring Indigenous Cultures
Sobonfu Some
Our Village has raised over $4,000 to send children to school, and we invite your generous contribution. Please see
