Debit card helps addicts stay sober
By Claes Bell | Bankrate.com

Seems like you can't swing a cat without hitting a new prepaid debit card these days. But one new entry into the crowded market, called the Next Step Card, has a very specific clientele in mind: recovering addicts.

In some ways, the card is just like any other prepaid debit card. Family members and others load money on the card, which can then be used at any business that accepts MasterCard.

A new prepaid card for recovering addicts can't be used at bars, strip clubs or liquor stores. (Photo by Elvissa.)

But unlike other cards, the Next Step Card has special controls built in that will cause it to be declined at places dangerous to those trying to kick an alcohol or drug addiction, such as bars, casinos and liquor stores. To prevent users from circumventing the controls, they also won't be able to receive cash back with purchases or withdraw cash from ATMs. Cardholders can also set up daily transaction limits and
text alerts that notify them if the user tries to make a purchase at an unauthorized business.

FunnyRecovery.com - Drug Rehab is no laughing matter. Until you hear Mark Lundholm.

The reviews are in. The addiction recovery-focused DVD Humor in Treatment - created as a support tool for drug rehab treatment centers, drug and alcohol awareness programs, and anyone else in the industry - is seriously funny.

Produced and directed by Steve Cannon of Cannon Films, this three-DVD boxed set (Getting Here, Being Here, and Leaving Here) dismantles with therapeutic brilliance the disease of drug addiction. It's a lecturer DVD like no other.

Total Recovery Now embraces a client in a community for healing. The humanistic approach focuses on encouraging change. The medical model refers to alcoholism as an illness that can be treated  without treatment, the illness may progress and might even be fatal.

The disease model views addiction as the progression of substance use (alcohol or a drug) that leads to a physical tolerance for that substance, which is followed by an increased need for larger amounts of the substance to produce the desired effect. With passing time, this leads to a physical craving if the substance use is discontinued . Total Recovery Now utilizes the Matrix and Kelly modules for treating substance abuse.

When treating alcoholism, many professionals combine the disease model with the medical model. Incorporating the two models assists the clients in understanding the medical ramifications, psychological triggers, and postacute withdrawal, along with the etiology of recovery in the five competency areas: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual.

The modality of treatment and the duration and intensity of sessions depend on the substance use, abuse, or dependency of an individual. Therefore, distinguishing whether a client's addiction falls under the category of use, abuse, dependency, or loss of control helps professionals tailor their treatment to the individual needs of each client. For example, a person who is at risk for substance use may be referred to a prevention setting, a person in the early-use stage could be targeted for intervention, and a person in the addictions stage will need more intensive treatment.

Well, I'll just stay home

By Snow P.

I am busy, very busy all the time. I have my husband of 31 years, my 3 children, my own travel company, women I sponsor, my commitments and my creative life to make time for. I don't have time to go to all these conferences and conventions, and yet every time I do, I get pumped with an IV of love, faith, gratitude and joy that can be compared to nothing else. It is like a booster shot of love and the only way you can get it is to show up.

I made a last minute decision a few days ago to attend a women's conference 3 hours north of my home with one of my sponsees who was feeling a little down in the dumps. We had just been to a big conference several weeks ago, but I figured it was "close" so go. "Close" to me is in the state of Florida. I also wanted to see another sponsee who lived close to the conference and just had some surgery. I was tired, had not slept well all week with a lot on my mind and my body trying to return to the eastern time zone after a Gratitude Cruise to Alaska, but I packed a bag anyway. We arrived on Friday night and went right into the main meeting. The speaker was talking on the first three steps. I sat there with my 37 years of sobriety thinking, blah, blah, blah, I have heard all this drivel many times. This is boring to death. I got up and while several hundred perfectly still women were wide eyed and not a bobby pin was moving, I left and went to my hotel room as fast as I could. I washed up and went right to sleep. I suspected the slumping in my seat also had something to do with it.

The next day my wonderful sponsee, who had tiptoed in the night before, brought me coffee and I was alive again. After breakfast, we went to hear the first of many speakers for the next two days. Every single thing they said was as if I was hearing it for the first time. The magic took over, the joy reactivated at the root, and I was taking the AA bath once again full of tears, laughter and gratitude. The old slogans of HALT, don't get hungry, angry, tired or lonely, it still applies to me every time. I show up because I know every conference or convention will change me and infuse me with the things that are more vital than bread and butter and prove once again that God will meet me anywhere!
