Greetings!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

Domestic violence can affect anyone. If you are a victim of abuse, you are NEVER to blame – it is NOT your fault. The abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, economic or a combination of many types of abuse. Committing domestic violence is a choice made by the abuser!

Domestic Violence: Impact on Social & Cognitive Development Home Study

Domestic violence has immediate and long term effects on children.  Each year, an estimated 3.3 million children are exposed to family violence, with 40-60% of men who abuse women also abusing children (APA FV report 1996). According to the Florida Governor’s Task Force Report (1997), when children are killed during a domestic violence incident, 90% are under the age of 10 and 56% are under the age of 2. In one study, 27% of all domestic violence homicide victims were children.

This training will introduce child development (including brain development) and the disorders that arise from childhood domestic violence experiences and provide therapeutic case studies and interventions that are cutting edge in the field of child domestic violence and bringing the child into healthy thinking and better lifestyles.

Overload: America's Toxic Love Story

Greetings Family and Friends,

I am writing you to reach out and ask you to support a colleague of mine  Soozie Eastman.

Soozie is currently in the process of developing a feature-length documentary called “Overload: America’s Toxic Love Story.” In this documentary she focuses on the fact that Americans young and old are exposed to hundreds of toxins daily.  We as Americans need to be aware of the risks and potential harm of these chemicals and should be knowledgeable on what we can do to prevent this.

I am asking that, if you have the means to participate in such a positive and necessary study/documentary, that you find it in you to do so. This will not just benefit you, but those in future generations to come.

Soozie currently has a short trailer which you can view at www.atoxiclovestory.com. You will have to type in the password overload in all lowercase letters to view the trailer. She currently has to raise $13,181, and all donations will be 100% tax deductible!

I have attached her personal request so that you can view, in detail, her goals and aspirations. Soozie can be reached at:

Email: SoozieEastman@yahoo.com
Twitter: @AToxicLoveStory
Facebook: www.facebook.com/AToxicLoveStory

If you are as moved by her will and drive on such a topic, you can make a donation at www.atoxiclovestory.com/donate.

Thank you for taking the time out to read this and for viewing her trailer. You can see growth in a society willing to help and support each other, and I know Soozie can count on you to help make a positive change America needs.

Sincerely,

Darlene Silvernail PhD LMHC CAP DAC

STEPS BETWEEN ARREST AND TRIAL: BARGAINING

A plea bargain is a “deal” made between the prosecutor of a criminal case and the defendant, usually facilitated by the defendant’s lawyer.

Let's first look at what a plea bargain is - plea bargains may best be defined as an arrangement/agreement in a criminal case between the prosecutor and the individual/defendant. Now this usually means that the defendant is pleading guilty to a lesser charge/sentence. Although this practice is accepted in many courts there are some counties that see it as immoral and unethical. Plea bargains don't necessarily reflect a sense of justice in theory however they are justified due to courts being overcrowded, prosecutor caseloads, and the costly expense of trials. Having owned and operated numerous alternative sentencing programs for the criminal justice system I have witnessed thousands of plea bargains in diversion criminal court settlement negotiations.

Example of a plea bargain might be a domestic violence batterer who would love to use one's power and control tactics to monopolize a long drawn out trial in order to prove one's innocence. The court will often offer a plea bargain for a lesser agreement such as:  enter and complete a batterers intervention psychoeducational program and once said program has been completed the individuals charges will then be Null processed .  Another example of a plea bargain may be a case of felony DUI. The  defendant may be offered to change the charge to a misdemeanor if the defendant will plead guilty and agree to certain requirements during the probation period.

Court TV dramatizes the use of plea bargaining in lieu of exchange of information or testifying to assist law enforcement and courts settling further cases. Plea bargains and settlement negotiations are and will continue to be the most frequent means for resolving cases and our judicial system.

Do you want  to develop and own a successful Alternative to sentencing program?

Corporate coaching helps leaders to think and plan more strategically. Let SCS help you design infrastructures that ensure efficient processes. Opening the doors to a new clinic or practice takes one set of skills however keeping your clinic/practice open and a long-standing fixture in your community takes a whole set of other skills.

Is there abuse in my relationship?

Here are some questions that will help you decide if you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship.

•My partner teases me in a hurtful way
•My partner belittles and degrades me in a cruel way
•My partner insists on knowing where I am at all times
•My partner insists on knowing who I talk to on the phone
•I try hard to please my partner so as not to make him/her angry
•I have lost contact with family  and friends because of my partner’s actions
•I find myself isolated from people who care about me
•My partner is nice to others, but is angry and impatient at home
•My partner has threatened to hurt me or my children
•After the threatening outbursts, there is remorse and excuses for the behavior
•My partner has hurt me or my children
•My partner has threatened to hurt me or my children if I try to seek help or tell anyone
•I am afraid of my partner

If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, you may already be in an abusive relationship.
