Florida Mental Health Counselors Association

August 13, 2012

I am writing on behalf of our state's military Service members and their Families to make a very special request. It is well known that our nation's military, including our National Guard and Reserve members, have been engaged in difficult duty over the past few years. Many are still deployed around the world, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands have returned to our state in the past few years and thousands more are expected to come home.

Unfortunately, these service members and their families are facing tremendous challenges after returning home. These challenges include issues relating to behavioral and mental health, employment, legal and financial difficulties. Over 74% of those deployed since 9/11 are National Guard or Reserve Service members who return to communities where they do not have access to military base programs and services. These Service members are seeking help from local behavioral health providers, but tend to not return for care if the provider does not have an understanding of military life and the impact of deployment.

This is how we can all help. FMHCA has partnered with Army OneSource to provide you with free nationally accredited online training on the impact of combat stress and deployment on children and families, military culture and PTSD.

From August 14 - September 30, you will receive information about these courses and how you can register. This issue is so important that I am personally committing to taking these courses and I'm asking you to join me by completing one or more of the four free courses. You'll receive your first invitation by email on August 14th.

The sacrifices that these men and women and their families have made is almost unimaginable. Please join me in thanking them for their service by taking these courses and learning more about how we may support them in their return to our communities.

Sincerely,
Elvis Lester, MA, LMHC, NCC, MAC President - FMHCA 2012-2013 www.flmhca.org

The Dolly Lammy

Peak performance defines how well we meet set goals. It means being able to fully focus. One of the main obstacles in achieving our peak performance is our inability to focus and control our attention. Research indicates that when arousal shifts attention shifts, so we need to control our level of arousal. I know this impacts my attention and focus. If I have too much stress in my life or too many distractions it is very difficult for me to focus and my memory is impacted, what about you? There have been considerable evidence that suggests that how we see our world/ environment plays a key role in the activation of various arousal systems. So we may then agree arousal plays a key role in the direction of our attention, so it is suggested that in order to reach peak performance we must first learn to manage arousal Arousal alters attention.

Do you get stressed out at work, school, or during your daily life?
You might want to get yourself a Dolly Lammy, one Vancouver company's solution to day-to-day stress. The Dolly Lammy is a soft, friendly plush lamb that helps you learn the benefits of conscious, diaphragmatic breathing, and with the words "Just Breathe" on its arm, serves as a visual reminder to breathe right when things get stressful. The use of conscious diaphragmatic breathing has proven health benefits in stress management and more. Visit The Dolly Lammy Breathing Company Inc. for more information!

Substance Abuse Treatment for Women

With the rising prevalence of female substance abuse, more women are in need of treatment. In 2007, 32.3% of the approximately 1.8 million admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in the U.S. were female admissions. Because women are more likely to be victims of physical or sexual abuse, which contribute to drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and criminal activity, there is a growing need for more gender-specific substance use treatment services for women. Total Recovery Now understands the needs of gender specific programs

As many traditional treatment programs do not allow for the inclusion of children, a woman may be torn between the need to care for her dependent children and the need for treatment. Involvement with the child welfare system also complicates a woman's decision to seek care, because admitting to a substance abuse problem may lead to involvement with the criminal justice system and/or the loss of custody of children. This must change; women should not feel torn between seeking treatment and caring for their families. Here at Total Recovery Now we tailor your treatment to meet your individual needs and understand the demands and importance of family and reunification issues and obstacles.

The Psychology of Color In Marketing

What have you chosen for your marketing materials? What were your reasons for making those particular color choices? Was it because you liked those particular colors, or did you have a particular marketing message in mind? While visual appeal is an important consideration, your color choices could be sending a specific message to the people who view them. Are you sure you know what that message is? In North American, mainstream culture, the following colors are associated with certain qualities or emotions:

Red -- excitement, strength, sex, passion, speed, danger. It's associated with movement and excitement.
Blue -- (listed as the most popular color) trust, reliability, belonging, coolness.
Yellow -- warmth, sunshine, cheer, associated with laughter, happiness and good times. A person surrounded by yellow feels optimistic because the brain actually releases more serotonin.
Orange -- playfulness, warmth, vibrant.
Green -- nature, fresh, cool, growth, abundance The color of growth, nature, and money. A calming color also that's very pleasing to the senses.
Purple -- royal, spirituality, dignity This color stimulates the brain activity used in problem solving.
Pink -- soft, sweet, nurture, security pink is the most calming of all colors.
White -- pure, virginal, clean, youthful, mild. White associated with creativity.
Black -- sophistication, elegant, seductive, mystery black is the color of authority and power, stability and strength. It is also the color associated with intelligence.
Gold -- prestige, expensive.
Silver -- prestige, cold, scientific.
Gray -- most associated with the practical, timeless, middle-of-the-road, solid things in life.
Brown -- associated with reliability, stability, and friendship. Caution however, for in India it is the color of mourning.

Safe Colors:
Unless you're dealing with a strong brand, stick with safe colors. Purple and orange will never have the positive color responses of blue, beige or green.

When choosing colors for your site it is important to employ contrasting or sympathetic and complementary color schemes. It is important to identify your market and ensure the psychological message you are trying to get across.

KNOW YOUR MARKET...so who will your market be?
