Top 5 Reasons Why Women Relapse

Women don't want to admit it. Their families often turn a blind eye. Yet drug and alcohol addictions that were once considered a man's problem now affect an estimated 2.7 million women.

Women have different reasons than men for using drugs and tend to become addicted faster and after using smaller amounts of drugs than their male counterparts. They also have different reasons for relapsing. Here are the top five challenges that pose a threat to women in recovery:
  1. Getting into Romantic Relationships Too Soon
  2. Unrecognized Love, Relationship or Sex Addiction
  3. Undiagnosed Psychiatric Disorders
  4. Stigma and Lack of Support
  5. Inadequate Coping Skills

Live Chat Online Meetings
Whether you're checking out Alcoholics Anonymous for the first time, or you're an old-timer looking for new haunts, you'll probably be happy to know that there are live AA chats on the Web you can attend virtually every hour of every day. This is where alcoholics gather on the Web to share their experience, strength and hope, and to help fellow alcoholics.  You'll find AAers an easy going lot:  in AA, the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.  This unofficial, nonprofit AA site attempts to chronicle as many of these live heart-to-hearts as possible, with an emphasis on ease of entry.  Many may be attended simply by stopping by a Web site and choosing a nickname and password.  Others require a  quick, easy download of software that essentially installs itself.  Some require an  America Online account.  Many are also not "officially" aligned with AA, but  nevertheless stridently follow AA principles and traditions.

The Wilson House
The Wilson House is located in East Dorset, Vermont, about a mile and a half from the cemetery where Bill and his wife, Lois, are buried. The House, which is the largest building in town, opened in 1852 as a hotel. Restoration began in October of 1987 with much initial work just to preserve the building. The House is in a non profit foundation and much of the money needed to operate it comes from individual donations. We have no endowments or large grants Restoration and maintenance of the Wilson continues.... with the purpose being to put the House back the way it was found. There are 14 guestrooms available for overnight guests, including a small efficiency apartment with a sitting room, bath with a shower, and loft bedroom. The peaceful, quiet spirit of the House is conducive to prayer, meditation, reading, or simply enjoying the fellowship among the guests and visitors. Local groups hold several A.A. and Al-Anon meetings in the House each week. Seminars are also held through the year.

Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety free screening self quiz

The first sign is chronic, irrational worry that can't be turned off. This can focus on a variety of topics from health to money to job responsibilities. The worry, while ever present, can peak to the point that it prevents functioning.

Worries can be accompanied by physical symptoms that include trembling, twitching, muscle tension, headaches, sweating or hot flashes. The person might feel lightheaded, out of breath, nauseated or have to go to the bathroom a lot. Some people might feel they have lumps in their throats. Others startle more easily.

In addition, there are certain physical conditions associated with GAD. At least three of the following symptoms need to be present for six months:
  • feeling keyed up, restless or on edge
  • being easily fatigued
  • having difficulty concentrating, or having oneÆ mind go blank
  • experiencing irritability
  • experiencing muscle tension
  • having sleep disturbances (difficulty falling or staying asleep; or having restless, unsatisfying sleep)

The American Journal of Psychiatry provided just such evidence in last month's issue, with the publication of a psychodynamic therapy versus CBT smackdown - which is best for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)? GAD is the garden-variety type of anxiety that most people get diagnosed for when they feel chronic, pervasive, and uncontrollable worry, often accompanied by somatic (physical) complaints, for no particular reason. So much so, it starts to affect their ability to go to work, concentrate on their job or school, and keep up with their
friends and significant others. CBT has already been shown in previous research to be an effective treatment options for people with generalized anxiety disorder.

CBT was found to be superior than psychodynamic psychotherapy, however, on a few other, secondary measures the researchers used, specifically those that measured trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), worrying (Penn State Worry Questionnaire), and depression
(BDI).
