Top 5 Reasons Why Women Relapse

Women don't want to admit it. Their families often turn a blind eye. Yet drug and alcohol addictions that were once considered a man's problem now affect an estimated 2.7 million women.

Women have different reasons than men for using drugs and tend to become addicted faster and after using smaller amounts of drugs than their male counterparts. They also have different reasons for relapsing. Here are the top five challenges that pose a threat to women in recovery:
  1. Getting into Romantic Relationships Too Soon
  2. Unrecognized Love, Relationship or Sex Addiction
  3. Undiagnosed Psychiatric Disorders
  4. Stigma and Lack of Support
  5. Inadequate Coping Skills

Gender-specific treatment, obstacles women face
Gabrielle Smith, CEO and therapist at Total Recovery Now, earned a bachelor of science degree in human resource management at the University of Maryland, School of Business. She is also a certified trans-personal hypnotherapist and is currently working toward her certified addiction professional licensure. Ms. Smith began her career as a behavioral health tech and group facilitator, thus gaining experience with clients who struggle with co-occurring disorders. She was subsequently inspired to identify and fill a need by creating a sober house community for women which is well known for raising industry standards and changing lives. Gabrielle's passion is to help clients succeed in finding a satisfying way to live and reaching their highest potential.

Many women would agree that we need a gender specific approach to treatment. Women impacted by substance abuse experience many treatment obstacles such as: Childcare, co-morbidity issues and economic self-sufficiency fears to list a few. Women also are at higher risks for family, and social risk factors that can contribute to stressors for completing Treatment. Women are more at risk for mood disorders, depression, anxiety, body identity disorders, eating disorders, low self-esteem, isolation, stress disorders, PTSD and poor social support systems.

Many women who use drugs have had troubled lives. Studies have found that at least 70 percent of women drug users have been sexually abused by the age of 16. Most of these women had at least one parent who abused alcohol or drugs. (NIDA) Substance abusing women are also at greater risks for Domestic violence. Women substance users are also more likely than male substance users to enter dependent relationships dominated by their partner, hindering their ability to perform basic life skills, such as managing money and planning for the future.( American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse,). All of these issues must be addressed in treatment and cannot be overlooked.

Setting Boundaries
Most of us enter recovery full of fear and confusion in all areas of our lives. Becoming aware of the woman we present to others is essential in understanding how people react and treat us. Low self-esteem, low self-worth, and the need to be liked by all (even those we don't like or want in our lives) lead us to become "people pleasers". This prevents us from stating how we feel, saying "no", or making our own decisions.

We often made the role of "Mother", Wife", "Girlfriend", you can add to the list, one of sacrifice for "the good of others". What we were looking for was love and adoration regardless of the effect on us. Through working the 12 steps in our lives, we learn that we are intelligent, competent women who can stand on our own two feet and voice a preference. This knowledge doesn't come over night. It is something we slowly work through.

Take the baby steps. Start by telling someone that you will need them to babysit or will meet them later - and you attend your much needed meeting; or you can't meet the girls for lunch - because you are meeting your sponsor. As you begin to change you realize that you have laid down and said "doormat right here!" so that you would feel loved and adored.

We hesitate to stand up for ourselves because of fear of rejection or anger. Learning to say "no" and sticking to it is not easy. Compromise is sometimes necessary. Learn what feels right for you. Remember, this is a journey, not an event. Starting with changes such as surrounding yourself with positive, encouraging women is vital to your growth.

Remember, you are on a path to becoming a confident, capable woman. That means no more "superwoman" and no more "door mat". Balance is the aim and learning to set and implement your boundaries takes practice and persistence.

Take advantage of available help to become a more confidant woman. Along with a Twelve Step program you may need therapy (dealing with the past) or a coach (determining and aiming for your future goals). You are worth the effort. Let the miracle happen!

National HIV Testing Day: July 27

Wednesday, June 27, 2012, marks the 18th annual observance of National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), reminding all Americans that HIV testing is an important step in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Too many people don't know they have HIV. In the United States, nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV, and almost one in five don't know they are infected. Getting tested is the first step to finding out if you have HIV. If you have HIV, getting medical care and taking medicines regularly helps you live a longer, healthier life and also lowers the chances of passing HIV on to others. For additional information and a list of testing locations, please  click here.
