HHLT and Constitution Marsh Collaborate to Celebrate Children's Nature-Inspired Poetry

HHLT Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh open to the public from dawn-to-dusk, Aug. 6-Sept. 3, 2012.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) and Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary are pleased to announce the opening of the River of Words Poetry Trail. The Poetry Trail is a series of unique, temporary installations celebrating the nature-inspired poetry of local students winding through one of the Hudson Highlands' most inspiring natural settings--the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary in Garrison, NY.

The ten featured works were selected by award-winning poet Irene O'Garden to represent the hundreds of poems created by students from public schools in the Land Trust's mission area during HHLT's Regional River of Words (ROW) environmental education workshops throughout the 2011-12 school year. The self-guided tour of the HHLT Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh is free and open to the public, and will be available to explore from dawn-to-dusk, Aug. 6-Sept. 3, 2012.

The Poetry Trail has been made available through a generous grant from Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp.

Hudson Valley Hospital Center Hosts Farmer's Market

Hudson Valley Hospital Center continues its healthy eating initiative by hosting farmer's markets once a month on the hospital campus through November.

Following the opening on July 31, HVHC Farmer's Markets will be held on 8/28, 9/25, 10/30, 11/20 (all Tuesdays) from 11am to 4pm in the parking lot fronting Crompond Road/Route 202, near the Main Entrance to the hospital. Staff from HVHC's Nutrition and Education departments will be on-hand with information to help integrate healthy eating practices into everyday life. Master gardeners from Cornell University Cooperative Extension Westchester County will be available to answer questions about gardening issues. Free parking is available.

"By offering this monthly series of farmer's markets at our hospital we hope to encourage everyone to buy local, fresh produce and educate the community on how to maintain a nutritious, healthy diet," said John C. Federspiel, President of Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

River of Words Educator Artwork Chosen for 2012 Collaborative Concepts Exhibit

Cathy Bakker, one of HHLT's River of Words educators, is having a very busy and productive summer.  In addition to leading ROW summer workshops, she is creating an art piece for the Farm Project 2012: Collaborative Concepts at Saunders Farm.

Collaborative Concepts is a not-for-profit arts organization based on the idea that professional artists working together can provide the community with exceptional cultural experiences. For the last few years, Sandy Saunders has invited the group to create exhibitions of outdoor art on the 140-acre historic, working farm, which is protected by conservation easements.

"I have visited the exhibit every year since its inception," Cathy explains. "It's become a family tradition and never fails to stir my creative juices. The seed for my exhibit sprouted last year as I walked among the art installations nestled into the gloriously beautiful landscape. . .the landscape that I hope is forever preserved."

Following an opening reception on Sept. 1, the Collaborative Concepts exhibit can be viewed from 10am to dusk for free through Oct. 28. Visitors should dress appropriately for a walk in the country.

New York DEC Revises Firewood Transportation Rules

In order to protect the state's ash trees from the emerald ash borer, a small but destructive beetle, the DEC has refined its restrictions on transporting firewoodWith a dozen New York counties infested with the emerald ash borer, mainly in the Hudson Valley and the western portion of the state, it is more important than ever to increase early detection of this insect and slow its spread. If the DEC discovers infestations early, it can better manage them, reducing environmental and economic costs to local governments and landowners.
