HHLT's River of Words Education Program Offers Fun, Nature-Inspired Workshops for Kids

Join the HHLT River of Words educators at Winter Hill for some fun summer workshops.  Earlier programs are geared for the "Mommy and Me" set (ages 3-6), while the offerings later in the day are for older, school-aged children.  Dress for a mess!

Mystical CreaturesJuly 26, 10:00am-noon, is a whimsical adventure perfect for all young fairies and sprites! The magic begins with morning story time, is followed by a hands-on activity, and ends with a tea party. Healthy snack included. Children under 5 must be accompanied by caregiver.

Everyone's outdoor adventures deserve to be documented. The Field Notebook, July 26, 3:30pm-5:30pmis a 2-hour mini course designed to get children 10 and up started on their own field notebooks. After a short hike into the school forest, we will explore different forms of expression; from field sketching, and watercolor to poetry and recording observations. Materials fee includes a journal to take home.

Youngsters fascinated with insects and bugs will love Critters that Fly and Crawl, Aug. 2, 10:00am-noonJoin us for stories, music and activities designed to bring out the critter fan in your child. Healthy snack included. Children under 5 must be accompanied by caregiver.

Feathered Friends, August 2, 3:30-5:30pm, is a fun-filled afternoon for children 6 and up in celebration of our native feathered friends. Participants will complete a hands-on activity and then make their very own recycled bird house or feeder.

And we hope to bring back last year's popular clay workshop.  Stay tuned for details.

There is a $5 material fee for each workshop. Reserve a space at 845/424-3358 or info@hhlt.org. Space is limited, so register early.

Volunteers needed for Storm King Hike and Bike Trail

The Town of Highlands Green Team is looking for volunteers for the Storm King Hike and Bike Trail program this summer.  Anyone who has driven along this section of Rte. 218, which wraps around Storm King Mountain high above the Hudson River, has marvelled at the fantastic views.  Last year, this stretch of road was closed to motorized traffic so that pedestrians and bikers could enjoy the scenery safely.

Volunteers are needed to help with the program again this year.  Any level of commitment is welcome.  For more information and to sign up, please contact Olga Anderson 917/509-1200 or olga.anderson@gmail.com.
