Closing 2008
|
2008 has been quite a whirlwind year for everyone. We saw the stock market crash, mortgage companies fail, and our investments sink lower than the Titanic. We also got to see a 700 billion dollar bail out put into motion, as well as the election of our first Black American President.
As your accounting firm, we realize our unstable economy affects everyone which has, in turn, been stressful on businesses and individuals alike. We do our best to monitor changes in both accounting practices and tax law, and keep our clients abreast with all that evolves on a daily basis. While we can't say we are omniscient, we do want you to know we are constantly thinking of ways to be financially helpful to you.
During the 2008 year, Daniel Jobe, our resident Music Retailing "Whiz Kid" launched an e-blast on assisting our music retailers with their year-end accounting. Don Kannenberg and his daughter, Lauren, participated in a food drive to assist local food banks stock up, as there are now more food shortages than ever. Alan Friedman, through the Band & Orchestra Division of Yamaha Music Corporation, moderated a two-day seminar educating music retailers across the U.S. on how to better run their stores and prosper in any economy.
We are all trying to find ways to be a part of the solution to our most challenging economy. If there is a story you would like to share, we would love to hear about it. And if there's anything you need from us, don't ever hesitate to ask. We want to be your business partner for a long time to come.
|
I hope you enjoy this latest edition of the FKCo Newsletter. From all of us at Friedman, Kannenberg & Company, P.C., happy holidays and a healthy & prosperous New Year!

FKCo Resource Partner of the Month |

Jim Hodgson of Wang New Media is a welcomed, fresh addition to the FKCo resource partner list. Jim is a Webmaster and Internet marketing guru. We lean on him heavily here at the firm to assist us with our web site needs. In an effort to stay fresh and current, Jim is constantly assisting FKCo. He has helped with our web site content management, design, and online marketing ideas. He is accessible, affordable, a musician himself, and in touch with the ever-changing world of Internet technology. Jim is available for any kind of web site development, and we highly recommend his services. |

Don's 'Whine' of the Month
|
 |
This is a gem of a Pinot from one of the great growing regions in California. The taste of a $40 bottle for half the price.
Don's Pick for December:
MACKENZIE
2005 Pinot Noir Vineyard: Russian River Valley, California Great with: Shrimp Piccata served over linguini. You won't be disappointed with this one.

Alan's Guitar of The Month |
|
My guitar pick of the month is the Gibson Les Paul, more specifically a 3-pickup "Black Beauty." Many of you "over 50" adults may remember seeing this lovely instrument on the cover of the most popular best-selling double live album of all time, Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive." What makes this axe unique is it's beautiful ebony fretboard, high-gloss black finish and gold hardware, coupled with 3 humbucking pickups, instead of the normal 2 found on most Les Pauls. So, "do you feel like I do" when you see this cool guitar? I would hope so since most of these guitars go for almost $4,000 new. Better save your tax refunds. |

FKCo Has A New Home
|
FKCo has moved to Farmington, CT. For those of you not familiar with the area, this is only a couple of miles away from our previous home in West Hartford. We spent 22 out of the last 23 years in business at the same place; it was time to be more efficient and synergistic as we continue to grow and develop our expanding base of clients.
Moving is never an easy task, but we made it happen and we love our new digs. We're now all on one, modern space-efficient floor, instead of the three-level, charming, converted house we once occupied. If you're local to the Hartford, CT area, we look forward to showing you around the new office and making our new home your new home.
Here's our new contact information:

Holidays here and gone?
|
It's hard to believe we've already rounded the corner on jingling bells, eight days of lights, and freshly made snowmen and are now on the way to the sounds of Auld Lang Syne. It seems like just minutes ago we were at the end of tax season, welcoming the spring and summertime. As we come to the winter season ,we reflect on accomplishments and ponder what we can do better in the new year. As a firm with a diverse base of clients, we are constantly looking for ways to better serve your accounting, tax and business needs.
For our music retail industry clients, one way we try to stay in touch and be supportive is to return to the Winter NAMM trade show in Anaheim, CA next month. By attending this vibrant show, we get rejuvenated by finding out what our attending clients have been doing and their prospects for the new year. We re-educate ourselves and find new ways to help them improve their businesses.
We've also been updating our web site to provide you with all the latest tax and business information you need. If you get stuck, www.fkco.com is a great resource. There will be more informational videos, articles, tax updates, links and PowerPoint presentations for you to peruse. In the mean time, if you have not had the chance to check out all the information that already exists, we would encourage you to do so.
As always, we're open to any of your suggestions, comments and ideas. Contact our Webmaster, Jen Lowe, at jen@fkco.com or simply add your comment or question directly on our web site at www.fkco.com. We're here for you and aim to make your life a little easier by addressing your accounting and tax needs. |

The American Taxpayer |
 |
Here are a few things you should know about being a U.S. Taxpayer...
-
E-Filing is the most efficient way for both you and the tax preparer to process a tax return
-
If you e-file as early as January and owe taxes, the taxes are not due until the April 15th
-
When you receive your tax return package in the mail from FKCO containing your prepared return, the most important thing to do is to open that pack immediately and follow the directions inside; do not wait until the week before April 15th, even if you owe taxes!! It's important to for you to review the return for completeness and accuracy, as you have the primarily responsibility for the accuracy of your returns
-
You now have the option to have your refund direclty deposited or tax liability withdrawn from a proper bank account of your choosing
-
Tax returns that are e-filed have less chance of error in the transmission of the tax data from the return to the IRS
-
Taxpayers who are entitled to refunds will receive those refunds a couple of weeks sooner from e-filed returns than from tax returns that are mailed
-
Taxpayers who are entitled to refunds will receive those funds even sooner when their returns are deposited in a valid bank account
