Kudos to Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT)NDOT

This summer, NDOT has been replacing all the storm water grates along Hwy 28 and 50 in the Tahoe Basin to make them more bicycle-friendly.  Prior to the recent change, the grates were perpendicular to the direction of travel and bisected the shoulder that either forced the bicyclist to ride the irregular surface or avoid it by moving into the high speed travel lane.  Now with the rebuild, grates are parallel with traffic direction and easily avoidable.

Thank you NDOT for caring enough about bicyclist safety and their bicycling experience in Lake Tahoe.

California Bicycle Transportation Account - Evaluation Committee Meetsbikeemblem

Last week, the California Dept. of Transportation held a two day grant review process for over 103 grant requests from county and city agencies from throughout the state.  17 representatives consisting of transportation engineers, designers, consultants, bicycle coordinators and two bicycle advocacy representatives (one from the LTBC) comprised the evaluation committee. This year there was $11.9 million dollars available for grants.  The most common grant requests were for designing and constructing bike lanes, bike paths, and wayfinding signage.  All applications had to meet specific criteria that generally promoted bicycle transportation, connectivity, safety, had to have at least 10% matching funds and was shovel ready.

The Tahoe Basin had a couple of grant applications submitted.  The committee made its recommendations and now those recommendations get elevated to Caltrans headquarters and must be approved by the Director of Transportation.  The announcement of grant awards may come in October.
