Public and interested parties are invited to comment on the project from June 5 to July 6.  There is a Public Meet scheduled on Thursday, June 28, from 6-8 PM at the North Tahoe Event Center located at 8318 North Lake Tahoe Blvd. in Kings Beach.  For further information, contact Peter Kraatz at 530-581-6230 or pkraatz@placer.ca.gov.

South Shore

Harrison Avenue Bike Path Project Resurfaces

Harrison Avenue is one of the highest priorities designated as a vital link to the continuation of the South Tahoe's Bike Path system and has received hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past 15 years for design alternatives to improve traffic flow, connectivity to the bike path system, parking and storm water mitigation measures.  Now, the City is trying to get key landowners along Harrison Ave. involved with an intelligent solution to a chaotic and dangerous traffic pattern, and help them get in compliance with their BMPs.  The Bike Coalition would like to see a bikeway built connecting to the bike paths on each end of Harrison Ave. to allow the thousands of bicyclists who routinely travel along this highly used area.

Stateline-to-StatelineSoDemoPath

Starting the end of this month, early July, will be the grounding breaking of the first phase of the 30 mile long Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway along the entire Eastshore of Lake Tahoe.  This first phase is called the South Demonstration Project and will go from Stateline Blvd. behind Harvey's along Lake Parkway and end at Roundhill Pines Resort.  Already, surveyors are flagging the route through Rabe Meadows, starting at Kahle Drive and ending on Elk Point Road.  Then the following year, the probable section will be from Elk Point Road to Roundhill Pines Resort.  The third section of the bike path will be from Kahle Drive to Stateline Blvd.

Highway 50 Bike Lanes

Once again the Cone Zone has arrived in South Lake Tahoe as the California Department of Transportation continues its storm water drainage projects from El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Blvd. this summer.  Along with drainage improvements are the installation of sidewalks, lighting and bike lanes.  And this is not the end of it - the following year Caltrans will be heading west bound along Hwy 50 to do the same treatments.  This will significantly improve our community - but we do need to reduce the speed limit - people are traveling 50 mph plus.

FlodPathBikAdCmteeBicycle Advisory Committee Inspects Bike Path Needs

Under the provisions of Measure R, a bicycle advisory committee was formed to help the Joint Powers Authority determine which bike path facilities needed maintenance and give them a priority.  Last week the committee, along with John Upton, JPA administer, rode their bikes from Lakeview St. to the 15th St. bike bridge making notes and discussing their observations.  Along with these discussion, topics about improved bike path connectivity and way finding signage also came up - although beyond the scope of Measure R right now.

One of the highest priorities identified for repair is the section picture above left located behind Meeks Lumber. Each spring this area gets flooded do to snow runoff and wetland flooding.  This highly used section is at times not passable and therefore blocking the effectiveness of the system to support an alternative transportation mode.  Nearly $250,000 will be available next year for bike path maintenance.  And, it is hopeful the City's grant request of nearly $500,000 will get approved for bike path maintenance.  More updates to follow as they become known.

Our Mission at the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalitionlogo is promote livable and sustainable communities by encouraging more bicycle/pedestrian-friendly facilities and to promote educational programs and events in which residents and visitors can safely and conveniently bike and walk on a more frequent basis.
