Cycle California! And Bike Coalition Team Up
California and Nevada's leading bicycling magazine is teaming up with the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition to promote bicycle tourism in Lake Tahoe. This is the first attempt by the two organizations to combine their resources for the purpose of reaching out to the bicycling community-at-large with an integrated media marketing campaign.
This campaign will include: display advertising in Cycle California! Magazine, both print and online versions, (reaching nearly 100,000 active adults); and distribution of the new Lake Tahoe Bikeway Map to over 325 bike shops from San Luis Obispo to the Sacramento/Central Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, Tahoe, Reno and Carson Valleys, and at over 20 leading bicycling events throughout Northern California.
The online version of the Bikeway Map, located at www.TahoeBike.org, will also be available free of charge to download and print. The Map will appear on numerous other web sites to increase the reach and extend this valuable Tahoe resource to hundreds of thousands of fit active adults. The map is expected to be available the end of June and announcements of its availability will be posted here and elsewhere.
Bike Safety Program for Youth Coming to South Tahoe
The Bike Coalition has had as one of its top priorities the development of a bike safety education program for the youth of Tahoe's communities. Now with the help of a grant from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and the American Century Pro Celebrity Golf Tournament, the Coalition has purchased bike helmets, bike safety education materials for kids, and a couple of bikes to be given to kids participating in the program.
The program is currently under development as a collaborative effort among the Bike Coalition, Boys and Girls Club, law enforcement representatives, and South Shore Bikes. Initially, the program will launch with a Bike Rodeo event early in July with follow up plans for a more on-going bike safety education plan. The Bike Rodeo event will encourage kids to bring their bikes for a safety check, and will provide instruction and practice time for bicycle handling skills and traffic safety awareness. The ongoing program is seen to have as one of its essential elements the semi-permanent placement of a bike handling and traffic infrastructure circuit course that would allow kids to conveniently practice on a daily basis if the choose.
Further details on the Bike Rodeo will be forthcoming in Tahoe Cycling News and in your local newspaper. For those interested in participating as a sponsor, vendor or volunteer, you may contact Ty Polastri at BikeTahoe@aol.com.

Tahoe Bike Challenge Begins
On Monday, June 4, hundreds of Tahoe bicyclists from around the region will begin their challenge to ride their bike instead of traveling by automobile to get to work, school, run errands or going to their favorite recreational destination. This is the 7th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge and it runs for two weeks from June 4 - 15 with an awards party planned for Tuesday, June 19.
The benchmark goals for this year's event are:
1000 riders
100 teams
10,000 trips
30,000 total miles.
The purpose of the event is to challenge everyone to ride their bike instead of using the automobile so that as a community we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions (primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) 33%, carbon monoxide (CO) 51%, volatile organic compounds (VOC) 34% , oxides of nitrogen (NOx) 34%) from motor vehicles, reduce traffic congestion, improve personal health, and demonstrate to transportation funding sources that our community is interested in and needs more bicycle-friendly facilities in order to build a more livable and sustainable economy and environment.
The event is produced in collaboration with the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency along with key sponsors that include: Nevada Department of Transportation, Tahoe/Truckee Transportation Management Association, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization, California Tahoe Conservancy, Bike the West, Tahoe Daily Tribune, Bonanza, Heavenly Mountain Resort, and the Lake Tahoe TV.
To participate, register online at www.TahoeBike.org and log in your trips, miles, 24/7, and receive daily chances to win great prizes. |
