Bike Challenge Daily Spin
Daily Spin #2Friday, June 1, 2012

Welcome to the second edition of the Daily Spin - a special edition of the Tahoe Cycling News during the Tahoe Bike Challenge.  We are just days away from the start of the Bike Challenge. Check your bike to make sure it is safe and ready to ride. Here are some basic safety checks:

  • Tire pressure filled within range (PSI setting located on tire sidewall)
  • Brakes working property
  • Working front/ rear lights & reflectors if night riding - its the law
  • Clean chain, lubricate and wipe excess lube off with clean rag
  • Have a filled water bottle
  • Wear a helmet

Help us build our bike community by challenging your family members, friends and colleagues at work or school to register for the Challenge and show the funding agencies we are committed to building a world-class bicycle community and destination.

Let's get rolling.

Wearing a Helmet Shows Your Intelligence

If you have a bike helmet always wear it when biking. If you don't have one, then get one pronto and be sure it fits properly and snugly - check with you local bike shop for assistance. Wearing a helmet can reduce head injury risk by 85% according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Their research also indicates that 91% of bicyclists killed in 2009 were not wearing helmets.

It is California State law that anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when bicycling. Wear a helmet - it's the intelligence thing to do!

Bicyclists are The Ultimate Green Machine

Did you know that for every mile you ride your bike instead of driving the car that you prevent 1.9 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere? Imagine that we total 30,000 miles during the Bike Challenge - that is 57,000 pounds or 28,500 tons of carbon dioxide not going into the atmosphere. And, not only will we be stoked about that, we will also feel great with the happy hormones (dopamine, serotonin) infusing our brain cells and shifting your attitude meter to positive and fueling our heart with sweet alpine O2. It's a healthy planet - inside and out.
