Epic Fall Riding

TeamGunThe cycling conditions the past couple of weeks have been extraordinary.  The combination of clear skies, warm weather, tacky trail threads, low traffic, and fall colors have been exhilarating and beautiful.  Here are a couple of photos with pals playing, sharing, and training for their ski coaching duties coming up in the weeks ahead.

Kirkwood Commits to Mt. Biking

KirkTurnKirkwood Mountain Resort is serious about mountain biking.  General Manager, Chip Seamans, and Mountain Safety Director, Ricky Newberry went to Whistler this summer for a national bike park conference where they learned about best practices, success models of other ski resorts, and networked with consultants and others in this emerging new bike industry segment.  As a result of that trip, Kirkwood management got infused with possibilities for their future and invited one of the world's leading bike park consultants to come out for a feasibility study and evaluation for the Kirkwood Mt. Bike Park.

KirkCrewAnd then on Oct. 16, 14 of us assembled with IMBA Trail Crew staff to learn about building sustainable single track trails and after lunch we went to the top of Chair 2 and built 750 feet of single track.  This was a great model of how with experienced guidance, tools, supportive land managers (USFS & Kirkwood), and volunteers we can build trail in a very short amount of time.  Kudos go out to Kirkwood and we look forward to building our future together.

SightingsWendel
It was on Powerline Trail last week that Dr. Wendell Murdock, DDS, was sighted trying out his new Specialized Epic mountain bike.  He said it had a Brain that could decipher when the suspension system needed to be rigid for smooth trails or soft to absorb the irregular terrain.

Wendell is a longtime local whose son Cory was a member of Heavenly's Blue Angel Race Team as a kid and went on to become a member of the US Ski Team.  Ride on Doc!

Tips of the Month - Trail Etiquette & Sore Muscles

Native Surface Rules of the Trail:
  • Ride on open trails only.
  • Leave no trace.  (avoid skid marks, pick up debris)
  • Control your bicycle. (reduce speed where others may be present)
  • Always yield trail to hikers and equestrians.
  • Never spook animals.
  • Plan ahead.  (water, spare tubes, air pump, nutrients, helmet)
  • Enjoy the ride, friends and surroundings.

Sore Muscles

To help prevent muscle soreness after a strenuous ride, pedal easily during the final 10 minutes and avoid hills.  Steve Evenson, says "if cramping occurs while riding try using Tums - the high dose of calicum in Tums helps reduce the cramping quickly."
