National
Be One of a Million for Bikes!
Peopleforbikes.org aims to make our country a better place to ride by sending a unified message to our elected leaders, the media, and the public that bicycling is important and should be promoted.
Their goal is to unite one million voices by asking people to sign a pledge in support of biking. Please visit www.peopleforbikes.org today to add your name and help build a national movement to build more bike lanes and trails, secure more funding, and influence local and national policies to better support bicycling.
Regional
Big Money Request For Bike Paths
A $20.3 million dollar grant has recently been submitted to the Federal Highway Administration by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and its regional partners, who will contribute $6.8 million in local matching funds, in an effort to build high priority bike paths around the Lake - a 75 mile loop called the Lake Tahoe Bikeway.
Those high priority bike paths include:
Stateline to Stateline Bikeway (10 miles, planning and construction)
South Tahoe Greenway (3.5 miles, South Lake Tahoe)
El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Blvd. Bike Path (.75 miles)
Lakeside Trail (Phases 5,6 and 7. 1.1 miles)
North Tahoe Bicycle Trail (planning for 8 mile link)
Kings Beach Commercial Corridor (1.1 miles)
As a supporter of the grant request, the Coalition is delighted and encouraged by the collaboration among agencies, jurisdictions, and organizations working together to help build a significant portion of the Lake Tahoe Bikeway.
NorthShore
Pedal There Thursdays, a bicycle advocacy program produced by the Tahoe City DownTown Association has launched the Pedal There Thursdays Newsletter to promote bicycle events and activities in the Tahoe City area. For more information contact tcda@visittahoecity.com.
The Coalition congratulates TCDA for their commitment and we extend our helping hand in the success of their efforts. Bravo!
SouthShore
Bike Path Plans on the Move The City of South Lake Tahoe (CSLT) has been committing its resources to advance the number one priority bike path in the South Shore called the El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Blvd. Bike Trail. This section will connect to the Linear Park Bike Path, coming from the Stateline area, with the El Dorado Bike Path that connects to the bike paths traveling across town to the beach areas near Camp Richardson.
Stan Hill, City Engineering Manager, shared the 90% complete bike plans during this month's Bike Coalition meeting. The Coalition will be working with the City in helping get this highly valued section on the fast track to completion.
Hwy 50 Work Begins
Caltrans has been working nights on Hwy 50, from Trout Creek to Ski Run Blvd., in preparation for a major improvement scheduled for 2011. Hwy 50 will be widened, a new turn radius built along the Campground with sidewalks, lighting, some landscaping and the placement of Bike Lanes on the Highway. This is great news for helping increase the safety for cyclists on the highway and will improve the accessibility and connection for all non-motorized travelers.
New Single Track Trails
The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Division of the US Forest Service has been improving, rerouting, and signing a network of single track trails that connect the trails of; Powerline, High Meadows, Cold Creek, Tahoe Rim Trail, Armstrong Pass, and Star Lake. It is awesome riding. The trails are in excellent condition and most of them are shaded by the forest canopy.
To learn more about these trails and the plans for more in the Tahoe basin you can attend the upcoming Tahoe Trails Conference scheduled Oct. 1-3, at Mont Bleu Hotel/Casino. Registration is limited to 200 persons and you can register online by visiting www.imba.org. See you there. |
| Tip of the Month - Your Neck
If you are experiencing neck pain while riding your bike, then start rotating your head in different positions every 5 minutes. The rotation will help stretch and relax the muscles. If you get a long stretch of road, and little to no traffic, then let your chin drop toward your chest and relax. Sitting upright every once in awhile also helps relax the muscles. Also, become more self-aware about your muscle holding patterns and then move out of the tension and take slow deep breaths through your nostrils and exhale slowly through slightly parted lips and relax. |
Become a member of the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition & Attend Meetings.

Anyone may attend the Coalition's monthly meetings. They are held on the second thursday of each month at Design Workshop, 128 Market St, Ste. 3E, Stateline, NV from 5:30-7:00 pm. |
Dear Tahoe Bike Buddies,
If you have been following our E-Newsletters, then you have noticed some particularly significant news about Tahoe's evolving Bicycle Community. There are many agencies, organizations and people working deligently together to make this happen and we all may consider how each of us can participate in this process.
We are at an exciting "tipping point" in Tahoe's cycling future; updated regional bike/ped master plan, significant grant requests by mulitple agencies, tourism commissions and major resorts recognizing the value bicycling plays in Tahoe's sustainable future, and the economy forcing everyone to re-evaluate how they recreate, consume energy, spend their discretionary dollars, maintain healthy lifestyle practices and make transportation choices to mention a few.
Your participation is critical to help move the critical mass of residents and businesses to become more involved and aligned with a cohesive plan to rejuvenate our community for a more healthy and sustainable future.
Our efforts are not really about bicycles, but rather about transforming the built environment and street-scape to become more people-centric and livable.
Continue to be safe and friendly on the ride.
Ty Polastri
President, LTBC
