Local Residents Petition Caltrans
A Class II Bike Lane in Homewood has been neglected by Caltrans for years.  The pavement is seriously deteriorated and unsafe for bicycle and pedestrain use.  Local residents are seeking the support of others in signing the petition in an effort to show community solidarity and concern for the safety of human-powered road users.  You can sign the petition at the following locations:
Westshore Pizzeria (Tahoma), in Tahoe City - New Moon Market, Alpenglow Sports, Olympic Bike Shop, Grind and Gear Cafe, and in Incline at Village Ski Loft, Truckee at Paco's and Cyclepaths.

If you want your voice represented, then sign the petition no later than September 30 - at which time the petition will be delivered to Caltrans.
North Shore
North Moving Toward Bicycle Friendly Status
Once the North Lake Tahoe Lodging Resort Association and its partners declared their commitment to become nationally designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community, they got in action with Part One of the application process and had it approved within weeks by the League of American Bicyclists.  Now, they are preparing Part Two of the application - a much more robust and in-depth application.  The Coalition is assisting when needed.  Good work North Tahoe!

Bike Lanes & Widened Shoulders
Caltrans is planning to build Class II Bike Lanes between Dollar Hill and Kings Beach and at least four foot wide shoulders from Dollar Hill to Tahoe City.

The Coalition is delighted with Caltrans plans and it will continue to work with local jurisdictions and Caltrans to see that more Bike Lanes are installed around the Lake in the near future.
South Shore
Public Invited to First Project of 30 Mile Bikeway
On Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Tahoe Room in the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) buuilding, located at 128 Market Street, Stateline, NV, the public and interested parties are invited by the TRPA and the US Forest Service to learn about and comment on the South Demonstration Project in preparation of a joint Environmental Assessment.

This project is located in NV on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, beginning on Lake Parkway at the NV state line in the south shore casino core, and ending just north of Round Hill Pines Resort at US Hwy 50.  The proposed shared-use bike path would be approximately 3 miles long and would include a 10-foot-wide paved path with 2-foot shoulders on both side.  For more information visit:  http://www.nvtahoebikeway.com.

South Shore's Hwy 50 Shows Improvement
Hwy50
US Hwy 50, between the "Y" and Stateline, received resurfacing and new stripping of lanes and shoulders this summer.  It is the best the Hwy has looked in years - particularly the freshly painted shoulder lanes.  In some locations, the shoulder width is six to eight feet wide and provides the room for cyclists to feel they have the needed space to ride more safely.

Thank you Caltrans for showing us that you can respond to the needs of cyclists and demonstrated there is sufficient room for Class II Bike Lanes to be installed.  Good job and we eagerly look forward to the next phase of Hwy improvements that can safely accommodate cyclists.

Hi Tahoe Bike Buddies: logo

Now with the primary tourist season behind us and the coming of Indian Summer, it is the ideal time to get on our bikes and enjoy this pristine place we all love and enjoy so much.

Over the next couple of months, your Coalition and its bike/ped collaboraters are planning for Tahoe's future bicycle facilities, educational programs, and promotional events.  We would like your suggestions and feedback on what and how we can help Tahoe become more bicycle friendly and contribute to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the region.

Please attend the upcoming meetings listed above.  If you can not attend, then check out the websites for more information.  And, always feel welcome in attending our monthly meetings at south and north shore or send us your ideas, suggestions and comments.

See ya on the road and on the trails.  When we pass eachother give a local's hello acknowledging with gratitude how sweet it is to call Tahoe home.

Ride On!
