Bike2Work, School, Play Week
May 11-15
Nationally, May is Bike to Work Month. Here in Tahoe, we are launching Bike2Work, School, Play Week to promote and encourage all our residents to use their bicycle for commuting and recreation during this campaign period and whenever the weather permits.
This year's goal is to have 750 riders log their rides online and tally up towards 25,000 miles for the week. You can sign up as an individual or as a team. Each day during the week, we will randomly draw a name to win valuable prizes. Also, there are numerous Coffee Stops around the Lake offering free coffee to riders.
For more information, a list of Coffee Stops, sponsors and to sign up go to www.TahoeBike.org for all your details.
Bike2Work, School, Play Week is a collaboration between the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. |

Nevada Bike/Ped Conference - May 20-21
The Eight Annual Nevada Bicycle/Pedestrain Conference is returning to MontBleu in Stateline, NV (at the south end of the Lake) on Wednesday and Thursday. This annual event is a great opportunity to go deeper in your understanding of the evolving nature of cycling in our region and networking with leaders in planning, engineering, public safety, event promotion and advocacy.
If you are a Bike/Ped advocacy organization or an environmental group with an interest in non-motorized transportation, then you can receive a registration sponsorship to attend.
Members of your Bike Coalition will be attending and presenting their expertise and experience to attendees. For more information visit www.bicyclenevada.com for the agenda, details, registration and contact Bill Story - conference organizer and Nevada Bicycle Coordinator, for attendee sponsorship. Looking forward to seeing more of you at the conference and saying hello.
This Conference is organized by the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board. |

Traffic Training Course for Cyclists - May 21-22
Traffic Skills 101 is the foundatioal course for individuals wanting to improve their cycling skills and is a prerequisite for becoming a Bicycle Safety Instructor. This fun course provides instruction and guidance in the basic priniciples of vehicular bicycling. Bicyclists have more fun, and are safer, when they ride with skill and confidence. The course combines classroom discussion and parking lot activities with on-road practice of the principles of vehicular bicycling.
We encourage anyone interested in improving their skills and/or helping improve bicycle safety education to take this first course on their way to becoming a qualified instructor. There is a tremendous need for professional bicycle safety education in our area and your participation in this course can help moves us toward a more bicycle friendly and safe community. |

Request for Volunteers
The success and sustainability of any charitable/education organization is in the talent and support of its volunteers. And, the Coalition is no exception.
There are a couple of projects coming up in June that could you use some of your assistance. They are painting bike lanes and bike emblems on the neighborhood streets in the City of SLT, and supporting our rest stop at Spooner Summit during America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride, Sunday, June 7.
Contact Team Captains for the program that you would like to volunteer for:
Thank you for your consideration. |

Bike Project Updates
Bike Trail Maps 50,000 copies of the newly revised Lake Tahoe Bike Trail Map are being printed and will be available and distributed in May. The demand for these maps has, and continues to be, very high.
We are grateful for the generous support of the following sponsors whose financial contribution has made it possible to produce these maps and offer them at no charge:
Nevada Commission on Tourism, Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, BlueGo, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization, So. Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation, Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board, Design Workshop, EDAW, ENTERSPORT, BikeTheWest, Alta Alpina Cycling Club, and the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
Bike Bridge - Sawmill Bike Path
A steel bicycle bridge spanning 260 feet across the Upper Truckee River is planned to be installed in early May - before the May 15th deadline. This bridge is part of the Sawmill Project 1B that continues from the Lake Tahoe Country Club bike path, goes over the river and ends at Sawmill Road.
The Coalition is working with the El Dorado County Department of Transportation, State Parks, TRPA, California Tahoe Conservancy and others in the planning and routing for Sawmill Project 2 which picks up at the bridge and meanders through the forest along Sawmill Rd. to Lake Tahoe Blvd. Phase 3 of this project goes from Sawmill Rd down Lake Tahoe Blvd. to D Street. We are looking at the possibility of having Class II Bike Lanes on Tahoe Blvd. and a Class 1 Shared-Use Bike Path through the forest, parallel with the Blvd, and connecting near the high school. More on these projects as they unfold.
Cops on Bikes
The SLT Police Department has received funding to reinstitute their 'Cops on Bikes' program for this summer. Funding will pay for new 'state-of-the-art' police bikes and training for the officers to learn how to use their bikes to carry out their public safety functions. According to Terry Daniels, SLT Police Chief, he has 11 officers signed up and everyone is very excited about the positive benefits for personal health, employee morale, public safety and low dependence on their SUV's. |
