Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition E-News Helping Tahoe Become More Bicycle Friendly
July 2008
|
Hey Tahoe Bike Buddies,
I trust summer finds you riding with family and friends. Here at the Lake, my 'wheelin' has been curtailed by the dense infusion of smoke from the countless fires in Northern California. However, my new found time is being spent well on the 'dealin' part of Coalition biz. In this new, (did you notice?), E-Newsletter I report on some of the efforts your Coalition is making to Help Tahoe Become More Bicycle Friendly.
Read on and Ride On!

| Bicycle Friendly Community Renewal
The City of South Lake Tahoe received a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) desgination on Sept. 21, 2006 by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). Now, two years later, the city must submit a progress report, on or before August 15, on what it has accomplished these past twoyears and what it intends to do in incerase its bicycle frindliness. The LAB reviews the submission and decides if the City warrants, or not, a continuation of its BFC designation for another two years.
The Coalition is working with the City to help it stay focused on the issues and concerns cyclist's have about safety and facility improvements. To that end, the following actions have been made or are being made: Striping bike lanes, Installation of Share the Road signs, Sweeping bike paths/lanes, Donated bikes to Coalition, Federal funding request to purchase 100 bike racks, Host Lake Tahoe Bicycle Symposium, and help fund the next edition of the Bike Trail Map. |
Lake Tahoe Bicycle Achievement Award Nominations
Now is the time to submit your nominations for any one or all four of the Award categories: Individual, Business, Organization (non-profit), and Agency (governmental). The Awards are given to those who have significantly demonstrated their contribution to advancing cycling in the Tahoe basin.
Nominations may be made by anyone and the LTBC Awards Committee will review the nominations and select the Award recipients based on their significant and measurable contribution. Send your nominations, along with a description of your nominee's contribution, to BikeTahoe@aol.com no later than August 5. The Award Selection Committee will announce and present the Awards during the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Film Festival on September 6. |
Make Your Mark Seen Here is a rare opportunity for those of you who have been wanting to contribute to the Coalition's efforts but haven't found a way you connect with. This may be that way for some of you. Check it out!
The Coalition has made an agreement with the City of South Lake Tahoe to paint Bike stencils on the City's Bike Lanes. Some training is needed for Road Safety Awareness and stencil painting application techniques. To get your volunteerism seen, contact Team Captain Shay Bouttillier at sboutillier@trpa.org. |

Fifty Bikes Donated.
The Coalition received fifty (50) abandoned bikes from the City of South Lake Tahoe Police Department for the purpose of helping kick start the Coalition's Free Public Bike Sharing pilot program and Bikes For Kids Christmas cheer program. Both of these efforts were the brain child of City Councilman Ted Long and enthusiastically supprted by Plice Chief Terry Daniels -- both avid cyclists.
Volunteers are needed to help clean, refurbish and generally get these bikes ready for use and gifts. Those of you that would like to help out on these worthy causes may contact Ty at BikeTahoe@aol.com or call 775-586.9655. |
The Tahoe Bikeway - Connected Loop Around The Lake A Coalition Action Team, headed by Hank Raymond, is drafting a proposal to advance and gain support for a continuous and connected bike route traveling clockwise around the Lake.
The Coalition believes the need exists, as many cyclists report, that a safer more improved route around the Lake must be provided. While bicycle facility imporvements are bing planned, the Coalition wants to be certain that, in the short term, the following improvements are made on the highways around the Lake: increase Share the Road signs, replace storm grates with inlets, and adjust fog lines (shoulder stripes) to favor the widest shoulder traveling in the clockwise direction. The rationale for clockwise direction is that motorist are looking towards the Lake while driving. Cyclist traveling clockwise (Lakeside) will be seen by motorist looking at the Lake and thereby will increase cyclist visibility and safety.

Tahoe Bike Photo Contest
For 2008, the LTBC is launching the Tahoe Bike Photo Contest to help inspire and produce a volume of bicycle photography depicting the beauty and adventure of cycling at the Lake. For Contest Rules and Entry Form go to Photo Contest |
