Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition E-News Helping Tahoe Become More Bicycle Friendly
June 2008
|
Hey Tahoe Bike Buddies, We are in prime cycling season and ready to share with you many of the projects and programs currently being produced and in development for 2009. Much of the following content is a summary from our monthly meeting taking place on the second Tuesday of each month. Enjoy. Be inspired. And, get ready to participate in many of the following programs and activities.

Bike-to-Work Week Huge Success During Bike-to-Work Week, May 12-16, 570 people registered to participate in the Challenge to ride their bikes to work and log their miles each day. Of those, 465 actually logged their miles totaling 15,551 miles for the week and eliminated 14,000 pounds of C02 emission into the atmosphere.
The winning team of the Glory Trophy was the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District with the Most Trips/Employee, Most Miles/Employee, and Highest Percentage Riding. This is their second win.
Plans are in the works right now for 2009 with a broader more inclusive theme: Bike-to-Work, School and Play. This way, we can encourage more bicycle use and measure the total impact on our community and the environment. Additionally, the Coaliton is interested in a Bicycle Safety Awareness Program for schools. Interested persons may contact Karen Fink, TRPA, Bike/Ped Transportaton Planner.

Marketing Survey of Cycling Visitors Curtis Fong, TGFT Productions, and Ty Polastri, Entersport Marketing, teamed up this month to conduct a pilot marketing survey of cycling visitors during the America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride. This comprehensive survey tracked information about riders' profiles, behaviors, spending, evaluation of Tahoe's cycling facilities and their suggestions for improvement.
This data will be evaluated and used to refine the survey for future use and to prepare a strategic planning document to facilitate economic development in the region using cycling as a branding direction. Grants are being sought to help underwrite the cost of launching, administering and evaluating the data for a larger population segment. To learn more, contact Ty at Entersport@aol.com.

Tahoe Bikeway - A Clockwise Loop Around The Lake In 1994, TRPA Executive Director, Jim Baetge declared a vision and commitment to build a connected bike route around the Lake he called Bikeway 2000. Since then, segments of bicycle paths have been built and others are being planned around the Lake. However, the LTBC wants to be certain that these efforts and subsequent plans ultimately lead to a connected bike lane on the highway, preferable around the Lake in a clockwise direction, which people can ride more safely and enjoyably.
The LTBC is re-championing this vision and plans to take steps to gain support, help facilitate, and brand The Tahoe Bikeway. If you would like to participate on this project, contact Team Captains: Hank Raymond, racerx1234@sbcglobal.net, or Jeff Miner, jeffminer@etahoe.com. To cast your vote in favor of the Tahoe Bikeway.

Nominations may be made by anyone in the community and an LTBC judging committee will review the nominations and select the Award recipients bsed on their significant and meaurable contributions. The Award Ceremony is held during the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Film Festival. More details to follow in the July issue.

Free Public Bike Sharing Program
Around the world Free Public Bike Sharing(PBS) programs are springing up to provide transportation alternatives. The Coalition is exploring its own PBS version that is appropraiate to the needs of South Lake Tahoe initially and later the entire region. A scaled down pilot program is developing in which bicycles are donated to the LTBC, are refurbished, and then made available for use, at no charge, to the public in a very targeted location(s).
Refurbished bikes may also be available to families in need who could benefit from the use of a bicycle. The pilot program will provide able time to understand market needs and interests, and develop efficient operational systems that may lead to a program launch in 2009.
Persons wishing to donate their bikes or help refurbish them may contact Ty at BikeTahoe@aol.com. |
