August 2012
Greetings!,

As summer is winding down and school is back in session, many of us find ourselves with a little bit of extra time on our hands. If you have not yet taken a few moments to complete the NCA/OFA Health Survey please do so today! Thank you to everyone who has entered their Newfs in the survey so far! Keep spreading the word to your fellow Newf owners! Take the Survey today.

NCA members, please note, the second notice for dues renewal will be mailed shortly.  Renewals must be received by October 1st to ensure members' information appearing in the NCA Directory.

Please share the latest news about the club and the breed with your fellow Newfoundland dog friends by forwarding this newsletter- just click on the "Forward to a Friend" button and enter email addresses of your friends to send on the news.

AKC Online Newsletters
Occasionally NCA members receive unsolicited email advertisements from either the AKC or a third party that received you email or other contact information from the AKC (e.g. a pet insurance company). This may happen after you have established an AKC account , registered puppies, track records or are entered into the AKC data base for any other purpose. If you would rather not receive these messages, there are two "opt-out" procedures on the AKC web site (AKC.org). At the bottom of the home page is a link for a "privacy statement" . Go to this link and you will find two further links: one to opt-out of emails from the AKC itself and another to opt-out of third party advertisers who have obtained your email from the AKC.

Participate in Information Gathering
survey Be on the lookout for an email from the AKC. The AKC is updating data in their Economic Benefits of AKC Dog Shows brochure. This data is key as it demonstrates to legislators that dog shows make major economic contributions to their host communities. It illustrates the positive impact of dog shows.

The emails will most likely be sent after a show or trial you may have entered. The data would include expenses such as lodging, meals, other food, fuel, parking, pet items, etc. Their data is outdated and it's important to show how much money we spend at these events, including that dog shows are a family sport and that they generate additional revenues for cities and towns statewide. Please send back your information if you receive one of these emails.

Show Your Legislators You Support Responsible Dog Ownership!
capitol The most successful advocates at state legislatures are those who have developed relationships with their public officials. One of the best ways to do this is by inviting them to your Regional Club meetings and community events.

NCA National and Regional Club events provide an excellent opportunity to show legislators and other public officials the good works that responsible dog owners contribute to their communities. When you invite lawmakers to your event, you also give them a great way to interact with their constituents and learn the benefits of supporting responsible dog owners. AKC's GR Department can help you invite legislators and local officials to your event. Contact us for assistance and suggestions.

BEC Library has Information to Share
small logo Have you ever seen a book or DVD on breeding or puppy rearing advertised but you didn't want to purchase it or have the money to purchase it? There is an answer to this conundrum! The Breeder Education Committee (BEC) has assembled a library of books, DVDs, and CDs, all devoted to genetics, breeding, movement, puppy rearing, etc.

These materials are available to NCA Regional Clubs and NCA members in good standing. There is a $10.00 mailing fee for most items shipped within the United States. For your convenience, a self addressed, prepaid return envelope will accompany your order. For destinations outside the United States, please contact us for a shipping fee quote.

Greetings!

The NCA Board will be holding its Fall Face-to-Face Meeting in St. Louis from Friday, November 16 through Sunday afternoon, November 18.  As they are for all face-to-face meetings, NCA members are invited to attend. Either Friday or Saturday (date and time not yet established), the Board will be taking a brief recess to visit the AKC Museum of the Dog since the NCA has been a patron of the museum and has made in-kind donations of art over the years.  If you live in the area, please feel free to join us on this fun side-trip.

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns cooler, remember it's time to get out the carts and harnesses and hook up those Newfies -- whether it's just for fun (cleaning up the yard and hauling leaves, pumpkin picking, or participating in a parade) or preparing for a draft test,  If you're new to draft work, try to attend a regional club draft test or a club fun day.  You'll meet plenty of people there who can help you get started.

This is also a first call for nominees for the NCA Heroic Newfoundland and Good Sportsmanship Awards. Nominations must be received by October 20 to be considered for awards this year. Read more about these awards or contact Ingrid Lyden with nominations.

Newfoundland Club of America
Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social networking systems, such as Facebook™, email lists, and blogs. Sometimes the rise of this entirely new class of communication has been accompanied by what has come to be viewed as cyber-harassment. Those engaged in cyber-harassment post negative comments and half or fabricated truths, often in a sarcastic manner, about individuals who cannot defend themselves. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
