March 2010
Greetings! ,

The excitement is definitely mounting as the 2010 National Specialty draws closer.  Here's a reminder of some of the special features of this year's show. Though you can't possibly participate in all of them, I hope everyone will find something of interest and plan to attend.
·       "A Musical Journey to Newfoundland" with the MacO'Brothers.  Join your friends for dinner, drinks, and snacks in the "Black Dog Lounge". (Monday 7:00-11:00 p.m.)
·       "Dog Owners: The Endangered Species of the 21st Century". Guest Speaker: Cindy Cooke, Legislative Specialist.  Everyone who loves dogs and the sport of dogs needs to hear what Cindy has to say and learn what we must do to protect our rights to own, breed, and show dogs.
(Tuesday 2:00 p.m.)
·       "From the Obedience Judge's Point of View". Seminar with AKC Judge and fellow Newf owner, Anna Lorenz.  Find out what a judge is watching for when judging an exhibitor's performance.  It just might help you improve your scores!  (Thursday 3:00 p.m.)

Health & Longevity Launches Online Survey
surveyThe NCA Health & Longevity Committee has launched an online survey. The purpose of this survey is to gather  important health information including what new diseases may be occurring in the breed, what diseases are important to the respondents and what the perception of NCA health information and the NCA message regarding health is. This survey is open to anyone who has owned a Newfoundland in the last five years, and we encourage you to participate. The survey is constructed to limit surveys to one per computer. Preview the survey questions and collect your information now.

Don't forget - Health Clinics & Seminars at this years' National Specialty:  Dr. Briden Stanley will share information about the research she is conducting on Laryngeal Paralysis (Tuesday 3:30 p.m.) and Dr. Richard Kienle, certified board cardiologist, will speak on heart problems affecting our Breed (Wednesday 3:00 p.m.)  Dr. Kienle will offer cardiac evaluations (including Doppler) Tuesday-Thursday, and H&L Chair, Jennifer Zablotny, has organized a CHIC DNA Blood Draw for Tuesday-Saturday.
WRDX Rules Update
waterdogThe WDC and NCA board have voted to discontinue the fitness swim for WRDX as of the 2010 season. Though a fitness certification is no longer required, it is a handler's responsibility to prepare and condition his or her dog physically for the extreme distance and time required to complete these exercises. It is the judges' responsibility to terminate any exercise at any time a dog is deemed to be in distress or appears to be experiencing difficulty in completing any of the exercises. The exercise will be stopped immediately and the dog will be excused from further testing.
