NCA e-notes   Monthly Electronic Newsletter of the Newfoundland Club of America
January 2010
Greetings! ,

The AKC Canine Health Foundation sponsored the 2009 National Parent Club Canine Health Conference in October of 2009. Both Clyde Dunphy, DVM and Andy Zinsmeyer attended representing the NCA and the NCA Charitable Trust. Their report on the conference will be published in the next issue of Newf Tide. Video presentations of some of these sessions are now available online - check out One Health, One Medicine - Strengthening the Human Animal Links by Mike Sampson; Matter of the Heart: Advances in Canine Cardiac Research by Mark Oyama or Clinical Trials in Veterinary Oncology: Past, Present and Future by David Vail. The NCA is strongly committed to improving the health of our breed and one of the ways we can do that is by taking advantage of the wonderful education opportunities provided by the AKC.

Please share the latest news about the club and the breed with your fellow Newfoundland dog friends by forwarding this newsletter- just click on the "Forward to a Friend" button and enter email addresses of your friends to send on the news.

Technical Resources - NCA Database Update
grefPhase I of the NCA online database has been created to provide verifiable data for the NCA to determine ROM, VN, Top Producer and other award status.  The NCA receives data on awards from the AKC (Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Tracking) the OFA (Health Clearances) and the Working Dog Committee (Draft & Water Titles).

The Tech Resources Committee has been working with Dogfish Software to create the Phase II release of the user interface of the online database. This has improved the usability of the search interface, fixed several display bugs, and reduced page weights with faster load times for dial-up users. This has resulted in a database that is much more intuitive to use, and in line with web standards. We are grateful to the Dogfish engineers, who donated over 100 hours of time to complete this phase of work. Additionally Tech Resources has obtained clean data reports from AKC (1980 - 2009) and OFA (all reports) and is importing corrected data for that information. We are working with the Working Dog Committee to get clean working title data from 1998-2007, and are currently importing 2008-2009 working titles. Currently the database will display results for dogs with AKC or NCA titles.

The Tech Resources Committee encourages everyone to visit the online database.  There are several areas where we can use your assistance in filling in some missing data.

    · If your dog earned a Canadian Title prior to 2008 and the dog is showing up in the database but the Canadian title is missing, please submit an award correction form.
    · If your dog has a cardiac or cystinuria clearance that was NOT submitted to OFA and is not showing in the database, please submit a health correction form.
    · If your dog is missing a call name, please submit a general form.
    · If your dog is not showing a sire or dam, please submit a breeder form.

Please send comments on the database and the online interface to Barbara Finch, Tech Resources chair

Barkfest at Bonham's Charity Brunch
artauctionAny dog lover, fine art enthusiast, or classic literature buff will get a real thrill at this year's Barkfest at Bonhams. Coinciding with the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this February 14th from 10am to 12pm, the annual Barkfest at Bonhams Charity Brunch for the AKC Humane Fund will feature a dog collar belonging to Victorian literary great, Charles Dickens. Or belonging to one of his beloved canine companions, that is! The collar is rather large, made of thick leather with a heavy brass buckle and nameplate which reads, "C. Dickens, Esqe., Gad's Hill Place, Higham." It was likely worn by one of Dickens' Newfoundlands, Mastiffs, or St. Bernards. Also featured is a sculpture by Bob Scriver (American, 1914-1999) Captain Lewis and 'Our Dog' Scannon titled, signed and dated 'Bob Scriver/1970' (on base) numbered 67/150 bronze with brown patina  height 8 in. estimated to auction for $2,000 to 3,000. Deadline for Early Registration for the2010 National Specialty

The NCA has more than 40 committees that work hard for the welfare of our dogs. Their annual reports will be published in the upcoming 1st Quarter 2010 issue of NewfTide, so you'll have an opportunity to see what they've been up to for the past year and, in some cases, what their plans are for 2010.

Also keep in mind that each year at the National Specialty, the NCA Board appoints the chairs of these committees and the members of all Board-appointed committees.  If you have an interest in serving the club and wish to be considered for a particular appointment, please contact Kathy McIver, NCA 2nd Vice President and Committee Liaison.  We'll definitely find a way to put you to work!

The National Specialty is fast approaching, don't forget to watch those deadlines! Early registration discount expires February 1. Reservations are now open for: Hotel Rooms, Reserved Grooming, Prime Handler Parking and RV Parking.  Visit the National Specialty Website for more details.

Sincerely,
 rogersig
