As you read through the 3rd Quarter Issue of Newf Tide which has arrived in your mailbox, you'll get to read all of the results and profiles of the outstanding dogs that attended this years' National Specialty Show in Frankenmuth, MI. While many are still basking in the glow of their well deserved wins, the National Specialty Committee has been hard at work planning for 2010. Judges have been selected, a tentative schedule has been laid out and there is much work to be done.  If you would like to help "Light the Way" and make the 2010 National Specialty Show truly spectacular, please contact chair Sandee Lovett. Many hands make light work and no matter where you live there will be a job you can help with. Keep watching the National Specialty website for updates and the Specialty packet coming soon!

Do you know a fancier who is the consummate "good sport"?  The NCA is seeking nominations for the Heroic Newfoundland Award, a dog who has been instrumental in warning others about potential danger or rescuing someone from danger.  October 15 is also the deadline for the NCA Good Sportsmanship Award given to an NCA member who exemplifies good sportsmanship in all avenues and who works diligently on behalf of others and Newfoundlands without concern for personal gain. For more information, or to submit a nomination, please contact Ingrid Lyden.
OFA Discounts for NCA Members expire June 2010
OFA LogoThe NCA is promoting health testing on all Newfoundlands and the open reporting of results in the CHIC database that is administered by the OFA. To encourage NCA members to have their dogs' health status evaluated AND recorded, the NCA has entered into an agreement with the OFA to reduce the submission fee for cardiac, cystinuria and thyroid results. This program will expire June 30, 2010. Read More.

The AKC and "Breeder Bills"
puppy 3
Of the over 800 animal policy bills introduced in state legislatures this year, none were arguably more prominent - or controversial - than the so-called "breeder bills". These 41 bills were introduced in 25 different states and sought to place strong restrictions on breeding practices, standards of care, and even caps on animal ownership. A majority also allowed for unannounced, warrantless inspections of a breeder's personal home and property without probable cause while doing little or nothing to protect the safety of dogs or their well-being. Read more.

Tell your legislators you support reasonable breeder legislation! Download our printable one-page flier that details AKC's position on breeder bills.
