NCA e-notes   Monthly Electronic Newsletter of the Newfoundland Club of America
December 2008
Greetings!

fat dogThe turning of the year is always a time for reflection and resolutions. Many people commit to plans for dieting and better health. This is the opportune time for us to consider the conditioning of our Newfs and make some resolutions for them as well. Maintaining a good body weight and muscle tone can have life long impacts on our dogs' health. Kurt Schulz, D.V.M., M.S., DACVS, associate professor of surgical and radiological sciences at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, says, "Controlling body weight is the single most important step an owner can take to minimize the risk of cruciate tears." Overweight dogs are also at risk for diabetes, heart disease and hepatic lipidosis. Jenny Zablotny, chair of NCA's Health and Longevity Committee also notes that studies have shown that dogs kept at an appropriate weight live an average of 2 years longer than overweight dogs.

Visit the Body Assessment Rating for Canines (BARC)  or the OSU Vet School Body Condition Chart for help identifying if a New Year's Resolution should be in your Newf's future.

As always, we want to hear from you. Email us at any time with your comments and suggestions.

A DNA Clinic will be held at the 2009 National.  The cost will be $10.00/dog. The clinic will be sponsored by Health and Longevity.
All blood samples will be submitted to the CHIC DNA Repository, co-sponsored by the OFA and the AKC/CHF.  This repository collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding genealogic and phenotypic information to facilitate future research and testing aimed at reducing the incidence of inherited disease in dogs.
If you have questions contact Jenny Zablotny . Find out more about DNA collection.

Newfoundland Breeders featured in AKC Breeder
Pouch Cove's Peggy & Dave Helming, 2006 AKC Breeders of the Year, say breeding is a matter of patience and careful study.
They share some thoughts with the fancy on breeding dogs. These observations have been gathered over the 40 years they have been engaged in breeding Newfoundlands and, more recently, during the last 10 years while breeding Portuguese Water Dogs.
