Greetings!
As the weather turns colder, Newfie thoughts turn to winter activities. While most of our Newfs are happy to wile away the hours snoozing, many Regional Clubs have harnessed the pulling power of these gentle giants in community Christmas Tree Pulls. Often run as a fundraiser for a club's rescue program or other charity, tree pulls are fun activities for dogs and people alike. Instructions for adapting a cart for tree pulling can be found here. Remember that given the weight of the trees, only mature (age 2+) dogs should be pulling full size trees. Younger dogs make great ambassadors and donation collectors at these events and it's a wonderful way to socialize.
As always, we want to hear from you. Email us at any time with your comments and suggestions. |

Junior Scholarship Kickstarts Nick Weber's Career
|
For over a decade, NCA Charities Junior Scholarship Grant Program has funded scholarships for 11 junior Newfoundland fanciers. Five years ago, Nicholas Weber received $1,500. He immediately put the funds to work by completing Grooming School.
Nick's goal was to become an approved candidate for the AKC Registered Handler Apprentice Program. His newly acquired grooming knowledge "opened the door" for his recently completed 4 year apprenticeship program with an AKC Registered Handler. This effort is considered the major leg of the AKC Registered Handler certification program.
Due to the intensity of the past 4 years, Nick is taking some time off (not really- as he finished his Newf last Spring--in record time). AKC requires one additional, independent year of apprenticeship (on his own, no Registered Handler) to apply for AKC Certification as a Registered Handler.
NCA Charities wishes Nick the best in his efforts towards certification. Everyone involved is quite pleased that our Grant has provided the "kickstart" of a potential life-long career for Nick, with our Newfys.
