Locals' Combined Effort Saves Post Office
A highly focused communications effort over the past three months has helped to keep open the South University Postal Station in Ann Arbor. The station was one of several hundred postal offices around the nation examined for closure.
"Understanding the importance of the issue,
identifying the stakeholders and reaching out for help from all is the
key," explained director of the South University Area Association (SUAA) Maggie Ladd. "The rest is persistence and shoe leather! After all, 'all politics is grass roots.'"
Ladd's message illustrates the crucial parts of the effort, which joined the effective campaign of several area business, governmental and community organizations. They included the SUAA, the Ann Arbor City Council, the Downtown Development Authority, the Greater Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, and staff representatives in the offices of Congressman John Dingell and Senator Carl Levin.
The campaign featured news announcements, letters and petitions to the United States Postal Service officials and postal consumer advocates in Washington D.C. and Detroit and a personal contact campaign by members of the participating groups to postal officials.

Triton Solves Flooding and Spacing Troubles for Champion Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge of Lansing

Eiler has utilized a wide array of PR activities specifically tailored to the meet the needs of Triton Stormwater Solutions and its focus on environmental design engineers. These campaigns have lead to increased exposure to a variety of new business opportunities for Triton. One such opportunity was the Champion Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge of Lansing project.
When Len Nadolski purchased an old Pontiac dealership in Lansing a few years ago, he had a plan to convert it into an "Alpha" dealership, with Chrysler Jeep, and Dodge products all sold through the single establishment. With such a large endeavor, Nadolski needed to expand the existing lot.
The lot contained a sizeable drainage basin. This put a serious damper on how big the dealership could be. As a major factor in dealerships are parking spaces for customer vehicles and new cars and trucks.
"That meant we were going to have to take out about 20 parking spots, a key feature of any car dealership, and we were already short of parking spots," explains Stan Schafer, owner of Schafer Construction, who was the general contractor on the project. "So we had two options: buy more land or put in an underground storm water storage system."
It was decided to replace the detention pond with an underground system, enabling 60 additional parking spots to be added for employee and customer parking as well as new car storage.
Schafer selected the Triton chamber system in large part for its storage capability. The pond was located in a corner of the site with the existing parking lot on two sides and the neighboring property line on the other two sides.
"We were really limited in space both horizontally and vertically, and Triton was able to get in more storage in a smaller space," says Schafer.
Triton SWS was able to solve the problem by uniquely adapting its chamber system to the requirements of the site, a critical function that Triton SWS brings to every installation location.
Nadolski took a very active role in working out the best solution for his dealership, according to Joe Miskovich, president of Triton SWS, based in Brighton, MI.
"Len was so involved that when we were first starting to install the system, he came out to the site after work in his suit and tie and was helping us take the chambers off the stack and putting them in place," says Miskovich. "It was a great sight to see the owner, in a suit no less, helping us get started. I think that it brought out the kid in all of us including Stan and Len because putting the Triton system together is like playing with a big green Lincoln Log set."
One of the challenges of the project was finding a way to capture water that was shedding right off the property. "Because we were working in a corner of an existing parking lot, all the water was flowing to that corner and onto the neighbor's property," explains Debbie Davis of Enger Surveying and Engineering which designed the system. The team installed a catch basin in the middle of the system to resolve the issue.
"That's the beauty of these chamber systems," explains Davis. "You can cut them, you can turn them, and you end up with a variety of different shapes and sizes."

Improving Your Exposure Through Social Media

Social networking is becoming one of the most prevalent ways to connect your business or organization to the target audience. Social networking websites allow for a wide spread, fast and cost effective way to communicate your message.
With the help of Eiler, the Association for Vascular Access (AVA) has recently revamped its Facebook page to allow for a more direct and multi-directional interaction with their audience.
The page offers a discussion board, event notifications, messaging options and various other means of communication with AVA and its members. Message can be sent directly to AVA "fans" on Facebook or be posted on the main page with alerts appearing in the notification feed on user's Home Facebook page. These features can be used as a worldwide hub of instant information exchange and interaction for AVA's diverse membership.
In order to allow AVA's Facebook page to connect with maximum amount of people Eiler has developed an AVA specific Facebook Tutorial. The tutorial allows people who are unfamiliar with Facebook and Social networking to have an easy step by step guide to not only getting onto Facebook, but once there directly connecting to and interacting with AVA.
Once these connections are established and AVA's "fans" have developed a clear understanding of the Facebook operations they will be able to branch out to other Facebook users and bring them into contact with AVA.
This is a key feature of Social networking. By relaying your organization's message to a connected group of people, the information is quickly and easily disseminated to a larger and larger audience.

Playing Ball With Legends Rounds the Bases and Heads for Home.
Businessman James Irwin's book that chronicles the life of University of Michigan and Detroit Tiger's baseball legend Don Lund, has been enjoying good success since its official release early in October.
Legends tells the story of Lund's life and achievements. Lund is a legend on multiple levels. He is considered the best Detroit high school athlete of his time and was a three-sport (baseball, football and basketball) letter winner at the University of Michigan. Lund's professional baseball career began in 1945 with the Brooklyn Dodgers and ended in 1954 with the Detroit Tigers, where he became the only person ever to serve the same major league club, as a player, a scout, a coach and a member of front office management.
Lund has been inducted into the Michigan Hall of Honor and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame for his time as an athlete and for his leadership as a coach. Among those he calls friends are former teammate Jackie Robinson and former Tigers Al Kaline and George Kell.
The book's success is beneficial to the local areas both in terms of solidifying Ann Arbor's history and aiding local business. Irwin, a local businessman, had the book printed by Edwards Brothers of Ann Arbor. The book also helps to reaffirm the image of Lund, a man who has had a tremendous effect on and affection towards the University of Michigan and the city of Ann Arbor as a whole.
