CAN'T DECIDE?

How much time do you spend trying to figure out what to do? Frequently my phone rings with people wanting me to tell them what to do with a situation.  They are perplexed and frustrated with their indecision.  It's easy to call everyone you know to get an opinion and in the end you still can't decide.

People often spend hours looking at the pros and cons of a situation and still can't decide what to do.  They can't sleep, their energy is completely drained and they have a feeling of helplessness.

I have great news!  You are just fine and you will know exactly what is right when you gather enough information about the situation to make an informed decision.  So stop torturing yourself, go back and gather more information.  You just haven't asked enough questions.

It is so easy to ponder about the outcome and start making up stories that are in no way factual.  Revisit your dilemma and make of list of what else you need to know.  Get back on the phone or go visit the place or people involved to find out more.  When you are satisfied you have answered all your questions, it will be easy to make a decision.  Knowledge gives you your power back.

By the way, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, this is your life and your journey.  You must listen to your gut and make the decision that works best for you.  Your intuition, after you have compiled more data, is always right.  Listen to it, honor it, decide and get on with your life.  Frequently there is no right or wrong just a different path on your journey.

Yesterday I received a call from a client trying to choose between three different apartments to live in.  She could see pros and cons to all of them.  All the data was collected and she wanted me to tell her what to do. I proceeded to ask her what was most important that she have in her living situation.  What were the, "must haves"?  Then to re-evaluate what she knew so far.

At this point, it became clear that it wasn't possible to compare the options as she had not gathered enough information from all three to make an informed decision.  So she hung up ready to make a list of questions for each one and start again with her process.  She regained her confidence knowing that the answer would appear as soon as there was more clarity.

This also applies to searching for a job or evaluating the direction of a project.  We get so excited when someone wants us or our opinion that we forget to ask questions so that we make an informed decision.  Many of us have taken a job without really knowing enough about what we were getting into.

How many of you have volunteered for a project before understanding the big picture and all that was involved?  How happy were you after the fact?  How many projects have you seen implemented before a proper analysis was done.  This one just makes me crazy.  Why are people failing to ask enough questions?  What's the worst that can happen, really!

Decisions can become effortless when you ask enough questions.  What have you got to lose?  Give yourself your power back, stay out of limbo.  When you are confused you just don't have enough information.  Enjoy the process and start asking questions!
