May Day is here, enjoy the spring. This month our topic is Create and Encourage Healthy Relationships. How might our yoga practice help us in this area? Well, remember years ago when Time broke the news that men and women are different? Now, this month you get our great breaking news: "Yoga can have a profound effect on your body and emotions." Just as in our practice of yoga, creating and nurturing healthy relationships comes through patient diligence and not through force or manipulation. Be sure to take in Kathleen Mates-Youngman's tips for healthy relationships. It's short but sweet, and I think she provides us with some good things to put into practice with our partners. See what you think. We have a new addition to the Lotus 7 family this month. Danarene Tizenor (pronounce it like "Dana Reneé) joins the Lotus 7 Lifestyles team offering hypnotherapy services. Although I must confess ignorance of the field of hypnotherapy having never tried it, I am intrigued by potential synergy between hypnosis and the single pointed focus we seek in yoga. I for one definitely want to learn more. Perhaps you do too. We should contact Danarene and find out! You can find her contact information below in this edition and learn more about her in this month's interview. You may also want to try her group hypnosis session coming up on May 25. In the studio this month we have a new Self Defense (TouhaRyuken) and Personal Development class with Master Zen Azuma. It's on Friday evenings from 7:00-8:00 beginning on May 6. Also this month in the studio we are offering a Healthy Back workshop on Sunday the 22nd from 1:30-3:30 taught by JeeJee Carter and her husband (me). Come and check it out. When we teach workshops it's more than just a longer yoga class! Also be sure to check out Lisa's report on the April fundraiser for the Valiant Women of Mission Hospital Foundation. It's good to hear that the L7O community has had a positive impact on this group's fundraising efforts and compassionate call to serve others in need. Special thanks go out to all those who pitched in to help with this. |

Yoga and Healthy Relationships
By George CarterRemember years ago when Time broke the news that men and women are different? Well, this month you get our great breaking news: "Yoga can have a profound effect on your body and emotions." Seriously though, our yoga practice offers us help and insight into our relationships, including our responsibilities and roles in them. Aren't successful relationships built (at least in part) by respecting others and paying attention to the people around us? Make no mistake here, a lack of respect, inattention (or even hyper-attention or "smothering") can damage a relationship. This may cause emotional pain and even physical distress to us and to those around us. Our practice of yoga is a reflection of our lives (that could be seen the other way around, too): we get out of it what we put into it. "Success" comes not from how many repetitions we do or from trying to get it right. Nor does it come from how far or how deeply we can force ourselves into what I call the "bendy body" positions, which for many can lead to frustration or even injury. I don't think it ever makes sense to force anything in yoga; it is not a competition! Vince Lombardi said of football, "Winning isn't everything, but the effort to win is." Well, in yoga getting a particular pose may not be everything, but working and progressing toward it is. Through our practice of yoga, we learn to be present when we practice. We learn to respect where our bodies are in the moment (present dwelling) and not worry about where we think it should be (future dwelling). We learn that our path is impeded when we want our bodies to respond as they did when we were younger (past dwelling). As we practice yoga, we need not be anything in particular (flexible, strong, healthy, ...) except present to what is. This serves to move us toward balance of body, mind, and spirit, that union that many of us have heard as a definition of yoga. With body and mind intricately interrelated, we may say as goes the body, so goes the mind. Over time, as we increase flexibility and strength, our awareness and control increases as our bodies become more balanced. This is true both physically and emotionally. Similarly, successful, lasting relationships come not through force or manipulation but from the continuing delight of paying attention to our partner, friend, child, parent, and others and enjoying their perfection at being themselves. This does not mean that we may not guide or direct at times, merely that we do so without manipulation or force, just as we approach our yoga practice. Creating and nurturing healthy relationships, like creating and nurturing our yoga practice, is all about taking personal responsibility, being present in the moment, and doing less to get more.

with community members and raises funds to support Mission Hospital. This support group is devoted to meeting the medical, surgical, educational and spiritual needs of women in our community.
The "Spirit of Giving" is about serving each other in meaningful ways as part of our daily lives. Some people demonstrate this through thoughtful acts, some do so through volunteering their time and talent, and still others do it through philanthropy. There are endless ways to show your "Spirit of Giving."
I have been involved with this wonderful organization since 2001 and on April 1st, they held their 15th annual luncheon and fashion show fundraiser at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, with proceeds benefiting Mission Maternity Center, Women's Wellness Services and nursing scholarships at Mission. I am pleased to announce with the generosity and support of the L7O community we contributed over $14,000 in donated services and over 550 hand sanitizers that contributed to a record-breaking fundraising net proceeds of over $150,000!
During October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they host a Think Pink Breast Health Wall of Honor at The Shops at Mission Viejo to raise money for Mission Breast Health Service. Make sure you stop by and say 'Hello', as I'm scheduled to work a few times that month!

Getting to Know the Lotus7 Family
|
Meet the Lotus 7 Family: Danarene Tizenor
Where are you from? How did you find yourself in Orange County?
I was born in Los Angeles, California and have lived in California most of my life. I was living in the northern part of LA County when old friends of mine (who live in Orange County) invited me to go along with them to a party at their friend Dave's house. Dave and I felt that little spark of love upon meeting and about a year later I relocated to Orange County to be with him. Now we're planning and preparing our August wedding. In short love brought me to Orange County!
How did you first get started practicing Hypnosis?
I was introduced to hypnosis by my college acting professor, Albert Morota. Along with teaching us how to "become" our stage characters, project our voices and emote, he shared his philosophy about what is possible when we let our subconscious do the work.
What made you become a provider? Whom did you study with? What or who inspires your approach?
Professor Morota's ideas intrigued me so I researched hypnosis schools and teachers until I found Dr. Juanita Holmes. Dr. Holmes had been practicing for over 25 years and had a wealth of insight, great techniques and an extensive program that included smoking cessation and past-life regression intensives.
It's very rewarding to be able to help someone gain control over and transform some longstanding issue that no pill (or any other surface intervention) could ever resolve. I'm inspired, first and foremost, by the clients and students I have worked with because in every sense they have been my best teachers. Dr. Holmes' style and approach still has the greatest influence on my practice; her motto was, "All hypnosis is self-hypnosis." but she did point out that people need guides to get them to their ideal destination.
What do you bring to the Lotus 7 family? What do you think L7 gives to you?
My goal is to be a useful resource to the L7 clientele. With my years of practice and study combined with a deep respect for the inherent gifts that each of us possess I believe I can be of service to individuals sincere in their desire to change for the better. Lisa (Brabender) is welcoming, open-minded and open-hearted, she and the group of practitioners and teachers are all of like mind; each is bringing their gifts and talents to share with others to help make their lives healthier, happier and more harmonious. Naturally I look forward to being a part of that; these are goals I share!
Who might benefit from Hypnosis?
Anyone that can be hypnotized can benefit from it. Hypnosis can be used to treat anything from anxiety to warts. If readers are familiar with the "placebo effect" they can appreciate that there is something going on that science (and traditional medicine) can't explain away and that's the power of the human mind. Hypnosis is simply a matter of reprogramming your subconscious mind (and some physiological processes) to respond and react in new ways. For the person who is anxious, new methods of coping are established; for the wart sufferer it's a matter of allowing the body to free itself of excess skin through targeted suggestion. I don't mean to make it sound like a magic bullet, because it's not. The essential component is the willingness of the client, and after that we let the mind do all the work.
Where do we start with Hypnosis?
I like to start with an initial interview, usually by phone (at no charge), so that I can learn what the client is hoping to achieve. If I believe that I can be of service I'll provide an overview of the process and ask that they work on "the list" before our appointment. "The list" is a self-assessment tool that enables me to create a therapy plan tailored to the individual. After that it's simply a matter of relaxing.
Danarene Tizenor
is certified in the techniques of Hypnotherapy and Psycho-Structural Balance and has over

ten years' experience in these healing arts. She says, "The mind and body, though studied, prodded and theorized about for hundreds of years, are still somewhat unfathomable. The mystery that each of us is basically the same yet unique has always intrigued me. I sought a better understanding, of at least myself, through practicing yoga. The grace and wisdom of yoga stirred in me a desire to try to understand others and to somehow be of service."
She was inspired to work with both the body and mind through teaching yoga and practicing massage therapy and hypnosis. She enrolled in The Institute for Psycho-Structural Balance and the Holmes Center for Hypnotherapy concurrently and was certified in each of these healing techniques in 1999.
She has worked throughout Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank, and Pasadena teaching yoga and seeing hypnosis and massage clients. She relocated to Orange County in 2008 and took a hiatus from teaching and her massage practice to focus on different business pursuits. She continues her hypnosis practice these days because she knows it to be one of the safest, most effective ways to create meaningful and lasting change. | Tips for a Healthy Relationship Kathleen Mates-Youngman M.A. LMFT
1.Nurture the friendship: Happy relationships are built on a foundation of friendship. These couples respect each other, enjoying spending time together, and know each other very well. As a result, when they have a disagreement they are more able to hear each other's point of view, find a solution and move on. Take turns planning a date night each week to nurture the friendship.
2.Take time to reminisce: Sharing memories of the early days, what attracted you, when you first knew you were in love, and special moments through the years, can strengthen feelings of connection in the present. Take time periodically to look at old photos and remind your partner how important they are in your life.
3.Check-In: Before you part in the morning ask what each has going on that day and then kiss each other goodbye, when you reunite show affection again have a nice calm conversation to ease into the evening, and during the evening at some time share something you appreciate about the other.
4.Practice respectful communication: Be careful not to talk "over" or talk "at" your partner, but instead talk "with" each other. Be sure you are giving each other your full attention, allow yourself to stay connected emotionally, avoid any harmful knee-jerk reactions, and reflect back to your partner what you heard them say. It is also very helpful to discuss in advance the best way to bring up difficult topics and to agree to a plan to calm things down should the conversation escalate to an uncomfortable level.
