American Real Estate Society (ARES) 2012 Annual Conference

DePaul Real Estate faculty played a key role at this year's annual ARES conference in St. Petersburg, Florida on April 17-21.

secFor the fifth year, Susanne Cannon, the Douglas & Cynthia Crocker Endowed Director of The Real Estate Center, served as Chairman of the Education Committee  and developed a 9-session track for college and university professors, adjuncts, and industry educators. The general theme for the 2012 meeting was designed to attract new teachers, adjunct faculty, those developing technology applications, and those building a real estate program. Included were six panels and roundtable discussion sessions, two research paper and case study sessions, and a wrap-up and planning session.

Topics covered by the Education Panels included: using technology and databases in the curriculum; incorporating "soft skills" (business etiquette, interviewing skills, time management, etc.) and co-curricular programs; using Argus in the classroom; exploring real estate programs that are not housed in a business school or finance department; teaching and researching real estate abroad; exploring experiential and service learning for students.  Cannon participated in and moderated the "soft skills" panel, where she presented the DePaul Department of Real Estate approach to incorporating these into the curriculum.

ShillingIn addition to Cannon's participation, real estate faculty, James Shilling (pictured left), and the Institute for Housing Studies' research director, Jin Man Lee presented a paper they coauthored entitled "Small Unit Rental Properties' Financing Needs".  In addition Shilling and Lee each served as lead discussants for other papers presented at the conference.   Finally, Shilling was a panelist for the session on The Future of the U.S. Mortgage Market.

8th Annual Collegiate Real Estate Conference

On April 13th, The Real Estate Center hosted its 8th Annual Collegiate Real Estate Conference.  This year's event attracted over 100 students and 40 senior executive real estate professionals who served as panelists for eight different breakout sessions.  The event provides students with the opportunity to engage with real estate professionals who represent multiple disciplines in the industry.  The aim is to expose business students to the many career options that are available in real estate so that they can make informed career choices.  The structure of the conference allows students to engage with established professionals on three levels: at a round table luncheon, at three breakout sessions of their choice and at the closing networking reception

Participating universities included: University of Cincinnati; Indiana University; University of Iowa; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Marquette University and Notre Dame.  View the full program here

Annual Spring Sponsor Meeting
The Real Estate Center hosted its annual spring sustaining sponsor meeting on May 11.  The group discussed the Department's new approach to teach students valuable life skills to help them be successful in the workplace.  Such skills such as team building, time management, networking and relationship development are mandatory for a successful career but are not always learned in the classroom.  This new program will work with students both in and out of the classroom to ensure that they enter the workforce as polished professionals.

Other topics of discussion included the use of Argus in the classroom, revising the governance structure of the Center, fund raising initiatives and budgetary goals.

Following the meeting, members of the Executive Committee were joined by contributing sponsors, faculty, staff and students for lunch.  Students introduced themselves to the group and two talked about their respective experiences while attending the REITWise Conference in Miami.
