Annual Spring Conference: On Shifting Ground
| This year's annual spring conference, On Shifting Ground: Opportunities and Risks in a Distressed Commercial Real Estate Market, featured two keynote speakers who delved into the complex issues surrounding the current market as it attempts to limp toward recovery. One key issue addressed by both speakers--Dale Anne Reiss, Ernst & Young, and KC Conway, Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta--is the enormous outstanding debt on commercial properties held by banks. Reiss noted that, "The next big
drag on the economy could come from about $1.7 trillion in commercial property
loans held by banks where tougher underwriting standards and a plunge in
property values will prevent many commercial borrowers from refinancing." The result, according to Conway, is that a high default rate in commercial mortgage-backed securities will increase from 6.59% in 2009 to over 11% by year end in 2010.

Graduate Students Attend ICSC Conference
|
The Real Estate Center sent six graduate students to RECON:The Global Retail Real Estate Convention hosted by ICSC at the Las Vegas Convention Center from May 23-25. With over 1800 exhibitors and more than 30,000 national and international industry professionals, our students had ample opportunities to network with leading real estate practitioners from around the globe. The students manned a booth that prominently displayed DePaul brochures and recruiting materials, and they also had the chance to meet prospective students as well as a large number of DePaul alumni attending the conference. The Real Estate Center paid for the travel, hotel and registration fees for each of these students and, in so doing, provided an experience that can't be found in the classroom.
The MBA/MSRE students who attended were:
Whitney Bellows Kevin Down
Brad Emanuel
Michael Heaney Derek Joseph
