DePaul Students Take First Place in National 2009 Chase Community Development Competition & Win $25,000 for Nonprofit |
Chase and Enterprise Community Partners sponsor an annual community development competition to give students real world learning experience. This competition allows college students to partner with New Orleans not-for-profits to create viable and environmentally-responsive real-estate plans that meet a prevalent community need.
This year, DePaul University real estate graduate students, Kevin Down and Ian Koss, partnered with students from the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University and worked with the nonprofit Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development. Their team project, 5523 St. Claude Avenue: Bringing Fresh Food to the Lower Ninth Ward, is a plan to transform an abandoned building in the Lower Ninth Ward into the neighborhood's sole grocery store. The DePaul team competed against three other teams in the final round and won the competition.
The students' work won the nonprofit Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development a $25,000 grant from JP Morgan Chase Bank NA, which sponsored the competition.
Second place in this year's competition went to a team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Washington University St. Louis. The students, in tandem with the nonprofit Broad Community Connections, proposed building a fresh food market on Broad Street. The plan was awarded $15,000.
Third place went to a team from The New School in New York, which along with The Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association proposed a housing and economic development resource center. The plan was awarded $10,000.
