2009 Chase Community Development Competition Opportunity for Students |
Chase and Enterprise Community Parnters sponsor an annual community development competition to give students real world learning experience. This competition allows college students to partner with New Orleans not-for-profits to create viable and environmentally-responsive real-estate plans that meet a prevalent community need.
This year, DePaul University real estate graduate students, Kevin Down and Ian Koss, partnered with students from the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University and worked with the nonprofit Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagment and Development. Their team project, 5523 St. Claude Avenue: Bringing Fresh Food to the Lower Ninth Ward, advanced to the final round which will take place on November 17 at the Brownfields 2009 Conference in New Orleans. The winning teams will be announced that evening at the Award Ceremony and Reception.
The winning teams will receive predevelopment grants for the sponsoring not-for-profit to assist in the implementation of the student's winning design. The first place entry will receive a $25,000 pre-development grant. The second place design will get a $15,000 grant, and the third place winners will receive a $10,000 grant. Chase will provide funding for the grants. |
| DePaul Real Estate Student Awarded CREW Scholarship |
CREW Chicago annually awards one or two scholarships in the amount of $3,000 for graduate and undergraduate students majoring or concentrating in real estate, construction, facility management, architecture, urban planning, real estate law, land economics, real estate appraisal or related real estate fields. The scholarships are primarily awarded on the basis of academic excellence and are intended to help qualified students pursue an education that will lead them into productive careers in commercial real estate.
Stephanie Matko, a DePaul MBA candidate in Real Estate Finance and Investment program, received the scholarship this year and will be recognized at CREW Chicago's Last Call for Fall charity event on Nov. 12. |
| Shrinking Cities: Redefining & Reengineering Distressed Cities & Suburbs |
The specter of economic divestment and population decline looms over many cities and suburbs in the American Heartland. Dozens of once-thriving industrial hubs, including Cleveland, Detroit, and Toledo, are bracing for another round of population losses, despite having already seen their population fall by nearly 50 percent since 1950. Even suburban boomtowns of the 1970s and 1980s with aging residential neighborhoods and older retail areas are struggling to deal with issues related to economic decline. In response to these problems, "shrinking cities" are turning to bold and innovative strategies. Some are closing roads and redesigning street grids while consolidating schools. Others are transforming abandoned residential areas into public open space or turning crumbling manufacturing districts into forest preseves. Still others are "land banking" to make possible ambitious redevelopment schemes. Join the Chaddick Institute & the Real Estate Center for a special half-day symposium in downtown Chicago to discuss tools and techniques for shrinking cities. We'll learn from Dan Kildee (pictured), Genesee County Treasurer in Flint, MI and President of the Genesee Institute, a research and training institute focusing on Smart Growth, urban land reform, and land banking. In addition, Hunter Morrison, whose work has been instrumental in Cleveland and Youngstown, Ohio, will speak about his experiences in redifining and revitalizing a declining city. Participation is limited to 90 to allow for intimate break-out discussions.

| DePaul Students Benefit from Eisenberg Foundation Career Day |
More than 100 Midwest college students from 11 universities interested in the field of commercial real estate participated in the third annual Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation Career Day on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 22-23, 2009. The event was unique in the commercial real estate industry by offering forward looking perspectives on critical issues from a broad range of topics. These topics included many conventional subjects such as real estate finance, real estate investments, and property operations, as well as unique perspectives on the important role of real estate trade organizations and universities in the industry. Seventeen students representing the real estate program at DePaul attended the event, and Charles Wurtzebach, the George L. Ruff Visiting Professor in Real Estate Studies at DePaul led the real estate education panel featuring Mark Eppli of Marquette University, David HutchisonofNotre Dame University, and Roger Cannaday of University of Illinois - Urbana.
