Futures Academy Promotes Strategic Conversations in Real Estate

The Futures Academy of the Dublin Institute of Technology, funded by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and King Sturges, is conducting a comparative study between the three global 'spheres of influence:' Europe, Asia-pacific and North America, with the intention of ultimately developing a number of propositions that will guide global real estate professionals in addressing the sustainable development imperative. To date, workshops and strategic interviews have occurred in Europe and Asia-pacific, and, on June 5th, the study was complete with the US workshop hosted by DePaul's Real Estate Center in conjunction with Purdue University's Building Construction program.

The goal of the strategic sessions was to bring together a number of key real estate professionals to identify the major forces of change affecting the real estate industry over the next two decades, focusing on the trends relating to sustainability that are likely to have a significant impact. More than 30 prominent real estate and construction professionals representing Chicago and the region participated in the workshop, which involved a number of interactive exercises.

The photographs show several of the participants working to cluster ideas around a set of themes that emerged from earlier conversations.

Institute for Housing Studies Featured at Research Showcase

The University recently hosted a Research Showcase for members of the DePaul Board of Trustees.  The purpose of the showcase was to introduce the Trustees to a selection of grant funded research projects that are being conducted across the University.  The Real Estate Center's Institute for Housing Studies project which focuses on affordable housing in Chicago and is funded by the MacArthur Foundation was among the select few featured at the presentation.

Susanne Cannon, the Douglas and Cynthia Crocker Endowed Director of the Real Estate Center, represented the project with student worker, Philip Freyre (pictured below).  When asked about his experience with the members of the Board, Freyre said, "The meeting with the Board of Trustees was a great way to learn about the research projects going on at DePaul. I was pleasantly surprised by the scope of these undertakings; the case of affordable housing in the Chicago region is particularly well-linked with DePaul's mission to serve the urban and less privileged.  It was a great experience to share that with the Trustees."
