DePaul Hosts 2009 Annual RERI Conference

The Real Estate Research Institute (RERI) held their annual conference at DePaul on April 7th and 8th.   The event typically includes presentations from some of the nation's top researchers, as well as panels and open discussions on topics of current industry interest. Participants take home working papers on topics presented at the seminar and have the opportunity to network with many of the nation's leading investment managers, consultants, plan sponsors and academics.

Two significant announcements were made at the meeting this year:
  1. RERI gave Susanne Cannon, the Douglas & Cynthia Crocker Endowed Director of The Real Estate Center, the honorary designation as a Fellow.  This designation recognizes leading academics and industry leaders that have contrbuted to the research mission of RERI.
  2. RERI awarded a research grant to DePaul faculty, Drs. James Shilling and Charles Wurtzebach, for their paper, Is Value-Added and Opportunistic Real Estate Investing Beneficial?  Shilling and Wurtzebach will complete the paper by 2010 and present it at next year's RERI conference.

The American Real Estate Society (ARES) hosted its annual conference in Monterey Bay, CA from April 1- 4.  The ARES Annual Meeting provides a stimulating opportunity for real estate thought leaders to come together to share ideas.  At this year's conference, DePaul real estate faculty presented papers and served as discussants.  Also, following last year's success, there was a special track of panels and presentations on curricula and pedagogical issues.

Susanne Cannon, Education Committee Chairman and ARES Board Member, coordinated five individual education panels that discussed topics such as:
  • International Perspectives on Education
  • ARGUS in the Classroom
  • CCIM and Online Site to do Business
  • Assessment and Accreditation
Education Data Providers: this presentation included NCREIF, Real Capital Analytics, IPD, CCIM curriculum and Site to do Business in the classroom, as well as a presentation by Dr. Jonathan Dombrow of DePaul's Department of Real Estate

Students Earn ARGUS Certification

The Real Estate Center is sponsoring the new ARGUS Certification Program for Universities this spring.  The ARGUS Certification Program for Universities is an intensive study of the industry leading real estate valuation software, ARGUS Valuation - DCF, put on by the ARGUS Software company and is an opportunity for students to maximize their ARGUS skills and prepare for the job market by becoming ARGUS Certified users.  Thirty-five of our students are participating in this program this spring.

This program is not part of the university curriculum but a voluntary training program offered by ARGUS Software and allows those interested students to become experts in ARGUS.  The program includes 10 online learning modules, a weekend of classroom work with an ARGUS expert and a certification exam given by ARGUS Software.  Once the course is completed, ARGUS Software will be able to provide certification that those students completing the course are truly ARGUS experts.
The Real Estate Center Offers Job-Placement Support

In these challenging economic times, The Real Estate Center is being called on to work even more closely with our students and those graduates who have been recently laid off to provide mentoring, career counseling and job placement support.  As there are very few real estate related full-time positions in the marketplace now, we have been working closely with our students to place them in internships and part-time positions with some good success.

In addition, we have developed an online Resume Book for our students to post their resumes.  We have completed the initial testing of this system and expect to have it fully operations in May.  When completed, this system will allow all potential employers to scan all resumes for particular skills and experience required.
