REIT Symposium Sponsored by NAREIT

Dr. Jim Shilling, the Michael J. Horne Chair in Real Estate Studies, coordinated a REIT Symposium in conjunction with NAREIT and the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics (JREFE).  This two-day, invitation only, academic symposium, held at DePaul on October 24-25, attracted an international audience of academic researchers who presented working papers for potential publication in JREFE.  Each paper had two referees, one of whom acted as the discussant at the conference and provided feedback to the authors.

The conference was divided into three sessions, each one chaired by a senior level researcher.  The session chairs were: Mike Grupe, NAREIT; CF Sirmans, Florida State University; J. Sa-Aadu, University of Iowa.

DePaul Real Estate Alumni Alliance Hosts Speaker Series

A full-house gathered on October 9 for a night of networking and lively discussion on the role of politics in Chicago's real estate industry.  The DePaul Real Estate Alumni Alliance (DREAA) hosted the event at The DePaul Club, the latest in its professional panel discussion series, for a crowd of alumni members, their guests, current graduate students and Real Estate Center faculty.

"Politics and Chicago Real Estate:  Competing Interest for the Common Good" was moderated by Joseph Schwieterman, Ph.D, director, Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, with panel members Lee Golub, executive vice president of Golub and Company, and Brian Bernardoni, director of government affairs for the Chicago Association of Realtors.  The three industry insiders talked in-depth about their unique professional experiences, and what it takes to do deals in the midst of Chicago's politically-charged atmosphere.  While their perspectives were different, one common theme emerged:  real estate deals only get done with full cooperation of the community, the alderman and the developer--sounds easy, right?!  For more information on DREAA and to learn about the upcoming schedule for the Speaker Series, visit www.dreaaonline.org.
