| DePaul Real Estate Faculty Participate in International Conferences |
|
Real Estate Department faculty were in high-demand this summer. Dr. James Shilling, the Michael J. Horne Chair in Real Estate Studies presented two papers at the AsRES Conference in Shanghai and was elected to the AsRES Board of Directors for a three-year term. At the Shanghai meetings, he also chaired the Best Paper Awards Committee and served as the moderator of an Affordable Housing Panel, which included the following panelists: Yuichiro Kawaguchi, Waseda University (Japan), Kyung-Hwan Kim, Sogang University (Korea), Peter Zorn, Freddie Mac (USA), Hongyu Liu, Tsinghua University (China), Chiuling Lu, Chengchi University (Taiwan), and Geoff Turnbull, Georgia State University (USA). Dr. Susanne Cannon made two presentations at the same meeting in Shanghai: "Managing the Risk of Sustainable Buildings" and "Comparing the Curricula of Master of Science Programs in the US, Europe, and Asia."
In addition, Dr. Rebel Cole was a "visiting scholar" at the FDIC during the first week of August, meeting with their research staff to discuss research on how real estate markets have led to the current credit crunch. He also presented a paper entitled "Legal origin, creditors' rights and bank lending," which is co-authored with Rima Turk-Ariss of Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon. This is a corporate governance study in the "law and finance" vein of the literature, which looks at how cross-country differences in legal systems explain cross-country differences in financial markets. The article summary follows: In this study, we examine bank lending at 2,723 banks in 102 emerging-market countries over the 2000-2006 period. We find that banks take on significantly more portfolio risk (allocating significantly more of their assets to loans) in countries: (i) where they enjoy English or Socialist, rather than French, legal origin, (ii) where enforcement of debt contracts is more efficient, (iii) where banks enjoy fewer restrictions on their activities, and (iv) where the "law and order" tradition of the country is stronger.
