Real Estate Center Receives Gift for Endowed Scholarship Fund
 
WurtzebachCharles Wurtzebach, Managing Director & Property Chief Investment Officer, North America, Henderson Global Investors, recently made a contribution to DePaul to create the Charles H. Wurtzebach, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship fund.  This scholarship will be made available to undergraduate or graduate students majoring in real estate and will help offset travel and conference expenses for students attending one or more professional association meetings such as ULI, PREA, ICSC etc.  
DePaul Faculty Play Prominent Role at ARES Annual Conference
The American Real Estate Society (ARES) hosted its annual conference in Captiva Island, FL from April 16-19.  The ARES Annual Meeting provides a stimulating opportunity for real estate thought leaders to come together to share ideas.  At this year's conference, DePaul real estate faculty played a prominent role throughout the event.  For the first time in its 24-year history, there was a special track of panels and presentations on curricula and pedagogical issues.
 
Susanne Cannon, Education Committee Chairman and ARES Board Member, organized seven individual education panels that discussed topics such as:
 
  • Creating & Maintaining MSRE & Specialized Masters Programs; 
  • Using ARGUS in the Classroom
  •  Incorporating Active Learning & Simulation in the Classroom;
  • Using Databases in the Curriculum & Research;
  • Classroom uses for ESRI/GIS;
  • Exploring Undergraduate Curriculum;
  • Utilizing Distance Learning & Technology; and
  • Providing Career Assistance, Mentoring, Internships & Placement.

    Several DePaul faculty and staff members served as moderators and panelists for these sessions including: Rebel Cole, Associate Professor; James Moore, Director of Distance Learning; Steve Bell, Associate Director; Jonathan Dombrow, Assistant Professor, Tom Berry, Associate Professor. 

    In addition, James Shilling, Michael J. Horne Chair in Real Estate Studies, presented his recent research: Do Changes in liquidity Affect Investors' Expectations? An Analysis of the Commercial Property Returns. 
  • 2008 Collegiate Real Estate Conference a Success
     
    On April 4th, a record attendance of 130 students from several midwestern universities listened to over forty Chicago real estate experts speak about career opportunities in real estate.  The industry professionals represented all aspects of the real estate industry including brokerage, development, lending, nonprofit/public sector, property & asset management, valuation, corporate real estate and REITS.  The event featured eight panel discussions, offered three times over the course of the afternoon, so that students learned about a broad selection of various careers in the industry.  A networking reception followed the event.

    Celebrating the Life of Robert Weitzman: A Concert with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra

    Acclaimed cello virtuoso and 2006 Classical Recording Winner, Zuill Bailey, joins the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra for a celebratory concert featuring Camille Saint­ Saens romantic and triumphant Cello Concerto No. 1 and Bruch's meditative Kol Nidre. The orchestra performs a selection of captivating works by Mozart, Brahms, and Bernstein.
     
    Mr. Weitzman was a founding sponsor of The Real Estate Center and friends and family have endowed a scholarship fund in his memory.
