2007 Mid-Year Update & Forecast

More than 200 real estate professionals attended the June 28th Mid-Year Update & Forecast sponsored by REIA and The Real Estate Center to listen to expert dialogue about three hot topics:

1. The Housing Bubble & Questions about Supply

While housing production and sales are down, there is more to the story than decreased demand.  David Hill, Chairman of Kimball Hill Homes and Dan Walsh, President of Walsh Construction offered insights from the perspective of the home seller and the home builder.  The bottom line is that the downturn is here and we can no longer deny it.  However, if you know your marketplace, there are always opportunities out there.

2. What's Real About "Green?"

2007 is the year that green buildings and sustainable development made it onto the agenda of real estate conferences everywhere.  Panelists Ujjval Vyas, Principal, Alberti Group and Vuk Vujovich, Director of Sustainable Design at Legat Architects discussed the importance of building a team from the onset of a green building development that understands the project upfront.  It is imperative that contractors, architects, engineers and developers are on the same page and address building performance early on in the design to ensure a successful outcome.

3. Go Private or Stay Public?  What is the Answer

When the REIT world re-invented itself 15 years ago, it was all about access to capital.  Now that major RIETs are going private, it's all about access to capital.  Panelists, David Neithercut, President & CEO of Equity Residential Property Trust, Paul Fisher, President of Centerpoint Properties and K. Jay Weaver, Principal of Walton Street Partners discussed the benefits and pitfalls of both sectors.
