Dark, Bleak, Thought-Provoking

Yo

This is one of those rare sci-fi pictures that dares to ponder big questions and provoke its audience to think. Plus, it has Joseph Gordon-Levitt pulling off an amazing impression of Bruce Willis.

It's Milla Time

Dice

How is it possible that a video game spawned five movies and not one of them has been good? How do these keep getting made? Well, it's Milla Jovovich, she's mostly naked a lot of the time, and it owes a lot to the video game vibe. Good enough?

Greg Wright

The level of skepticism about this project is probably predictable. The book has been filmed many, many memorable times, and the musical has been around for, well, forever. What could possibly be new or fresh about the latest cinematic stab at the story? Well, apparently, a lot! Skeptics are being turned into, um, believers by the early looks at this December release, now rescheduled for Christmas Day.

An Overstatement? You Be the Judge

Yes, we're all fans of Russell Crowe... and yes, a great many of us are fans of the Oscar-winning director Darren Aronofsky, who has brought us Pi, The Fountain, The Wrestler, and Black Swan over the years (among other films).

And yes, we can't wait to see what these two auteurs do when they collaborate on a film adaption of the story of Noah... which we've been keeping you pretty well informed about. (We even hope to have a set-visit report next month, if we can wheedle an invitation.)

But as we pointed out a couple weeks ago, it's not just the websites, geeks, and borderline Christians who are getting stoked about developments of late.

Last month, it was Entertainment Weekly, with some predictable snark that some conservative pundits took as fact.

Today, it's The Wall Street Journal dedicating over 1500 words to "Hollywood's New Bible Stories." One of HJ's owners, Jonathan Bock, is quoted extensively in the article.

The Iran Job

Darrel Manson

I recently had an opportunity to visit with the director of The Iran Job, Till Schauder, and the film's central character, Kevin Sheppard, who went to Iran to play basketball in the Iran Super League. The film chronicles his year in Iran playing basketball and meeting the people. The film seeks to span the gap between what we see in the media about Iran and Sheppard's experience. It is scheduled for release in L.A. and New York, and has a Kickstarter campaign to expand its release.

It Was Hobbit Day (or Was It?)

With all the excitement, there are those detractors out there who believe we are celebrating Hobbit Day on the wrong date! Whatever Tolkien's intentions, he probably would be surprised that people around the world are celebrating Hobbit Day at all.

Elijah Wood Interview with CBS This Morning

In the words of CBS This Morning interviewer, Tracy Smith, "Wood's character, based on a story with a certain nerdy appeal, helped catapult Elijah Wood into the very un-nerdy world of a Hollywood heartthrob."

Ehud Report: 5 Baffling Artistic Decisions

Michael P. MordengaThe Tolkien fantasy series Lord of the Rings is not short on beautiful and artistic offerings, but you can't expect the world's most popular fantasy to get a golden goose egg every time.  Here is a list of LOTR merch that baffles me...

When Pierce Brosnan debuted his Bond in 1995's Goldeneye, it seemed that an ideal confluence of character, toughness, intelligence, and flair had given us the perfect twentieth century Bond.

But when negotiations between Brosnan and MGM broke down, it became evident that he wouldn't be able to join Connery or Moore in longevity, and fans would simply be able to appreciate what he brought to the table.

Several Doses of Star Power

Darrel Manson

The hook of this collection is that there are big name actors in these films. These nine films (ranging from 8 to 25 minutes) boast actors who among them have a carload of Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes, and Tonys.

The Avengers The Avengers

Earth's Mightiest Movie

Arnaldo Reyes

Now on Blu-ray. Marvel took a huge risk in creating its cinematic universe, and as Phase One comes to an end, the billion dollar behemoth that is The Avengers proves that the risk was worth taking; but does the Blu-ray live up to the onscreen performance?
