The Words The Words

Life and Fiction

Darrel Manson

This film walks that line between life and fiction in some very interesting ways.  The film is set up as a story within a story (which in turn also has a story within it).

Noah and the Coast Guard
 Skipper Crowe Gets A Lift

Various news organization reported Monday that the U.S. Coast Guard provided an impromptu lift for Russell Crowe and a companion who had been out kayaking near Long Island and got caught out too close to dark.

Crowe is, of course, on Long Island for location shooting of Darren Aaronofsky's Noah, scheduled for a 2014 release. CNN's report includes the following:

The Oscar-winning actor thanked "the boys from the U.S Coast Guard for guiding the way" on his official Twitter feed.

In another tweet, he made light of the experience: "Not lost, we knew where exactly where we were ... we ran out of day."

Interestingly, CNN failed to note that Crowe was filming a major biblical epic in the area... and the irony of an ark skipper needing rescue from a kayak was consequently lost on the news org.

Liberal Agenda for Hobbit?
09/07/12 |  Commentary, Satire | Comment

Michael P. MordengaIt came as a bit of a shocker, but Peter Jackson admitted to the Chicago Times that the Hobbit will unabashedly have a liberal agenda.  Jackson makes no apologies for his views and said he wished the original trilogy had powerful liberal and democratic undertones.

Are you terrified about the corrupting influence of Hollywood films? We've got the list of liberal artistic decisions that will effect the movie...

Tolkien Meets Today's Counterculture

The Fellows Hip: Rise of the Gamers certainly does not have the look and feel of a first attempt by a fledgling production company. The acting by the principal players is very good, and the script and cinematography suggest a more experienced film crew.

RIP Professor Tolkien

JRR Tolkien passed away thirty-nine years ago. I thought you would enjoy this video from today's CBS News Sunday Morning.

Part II: Spiritual History of Bond
Sir Sean Connery, I Presume
09/04/12 | Comment Here

Bond's origins are much simpler than the gadget-oriented spymaster of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. With Connery as our image, we watch a youngish spy solve problems with his fists, his charm, and his bullish ability to follow or disregard orders as the situation might require.

Fading Memories

Darrel Manson

What happens to a person (or a society) when memory is gone? For a robot, it can just be reformatted and new memories inserted. But for humans much of who and what we are depends on memories. Our relationships, our joys, our sufferings all shape us, but they are completely dependent on our memories.

The Carol Burnett Show The Carol Burnett Show

The Ultimate Collection? Yup.

Greg Wright

Now on DVD. The spiritual angle on this program doesn't get deep at all. I can at least back Solomon's notion that there is a time to weep, and there is a time to laugh. This set is for the laughing part. The Carol Burnett Show knew that shuffling feet could be milked for more laughs than a bushel of f-bombs.
