Hope Springs
Marriage in Real Life? Dice
I was under the impression that it floated and now you are telling me it springs? Whatever hope does, this movie attempts to tell a straightforward film about marriage with no bells, whistles, or twists. Oh, and lots of sex talk.

News About What's in the Works for Film and Faith Managing Editor Greg Wright
Got Hell? Hollywood Jesus founder David Bruce is interviewed by former HJ contributor (now filmmaker) Kevin Miller about what Christians and non-Christians think of hell. David expresses the opinion that it doesn't mean much to non-believers. What do you think? More from the Pipeline this week...
Pan Pacific Film Festival
The fifth annual Pan Pacific Film Festival is slated for October 18-21st in Santa Anita, and they're using ujimma.com ("fundraising for faithdoers") to raise capital for the event. (In case you're wondering, this would be "Christian Kickstarting.") Here's some info from the site, and their introductory video.
I came across these incredibly delectable quotes from Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the actual Christian couple featured in the fictionalized movie. I had the privilege of meeting them in Los Angeles during press promotions for the theatrical release of the film, and they are truly a breath of fresh air.
The American Bible Challenge
Yeah... but is the show actually any good, or did the network get the rave numbers simply because they laid out the cash for a great marketing campaign? Well, our own resident cynic Darrel Manson actually attended a taping of the show and enjoyed himself. And here are some other comments from HJ's staffers...

Franklin is unique amongst Hollywood's executive class in that he is an ordained preacher and published author. Produced By Faith, an inspirational and motivational self-help book chronicling his outlook on life and reflecting upon his experiences in the entertainment industry, was published last year.
The Christian Filmmakers Hangout
Often, the biggest challenge in learning to improve our craft is to glean the knowledge and insight from those who have more experience than we do. Mentoring has become a lost art and finding those who are willing to invest into others is difficult.

Cru is helping shape the future through film. "Our goal is to help you discover a person's story through the themes of films. As you listen to their story, you can share your own and connect the viewer to the person of Christ."

"Biblical Narratives Can Sell in Zimbabwe as Easily as Missouri" Steve Norton
It's clear that Maltin believes the appeal of these stories lies primarily within their box office potential. Assuming that he's correct, one hopes that the quality of storytelling provides the audience with more than just another trend in studio tentpoles. As a filmgoer, my desire is to see these projects be told with depth and meaning. As a Christian, my interests in projects such as these increases dramatically. Similarly, as an experienced film critic, Maltin is also a man who seeks quality over quantity. Reacting against films that are "carbon copies of something that [he's] seen six times before," he continues to emphasize the value of creative and intelligent filmmaking in an industry that looks primarily to marketing as its motivation.

Stay Tuned for More Hobbit Coverage
Crossdove Studios is elated by their new DVD release Lord of the Lords which is a Christian spinoff of the popular Lord of the Rings trilogy. Edward Burroughs proudly told his southern church underwriters that this movie is going to be God's greatest gift to the cinema.
The movie sounds vaguely familiar, but tweaked for copyright issues. Burrough's world is set in The Shiner, where grandpa Billy Bo tells his grandson, Frido, about the greatest story ever told. He pulls out his Ancient Scripture Book and begins to talk about his adventures with a warrior named Aracross and the High Pastor Godalf. The viewer is then taken to the whimsical world of Hobwarks, where the necklace of Syn is causing an evil and heavy burden on all the inhabitants. Click through for more wit from columnist Michael P. Billed as "The world's largest fantasy/SF convention," Dragon*Con has gathered every year since 1987. This year the four days (this Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3) will include a jam-packed schedule of events in its "Tolkien Track."
Those of us who have been following the Hobbit movies for what seems like forever know that the movie was originally assigned to the directorship of Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy). So, just how much del Toro is left in Peter Jackson's version of the story

Who's Winning the (Trade) War? Darrel Manson
Does America have anything to fear from China's growing economic strength? The answer is a strong "Yes!" according to Peter Navarro, an economics professor who has made the film Death by China (based on his book by the same name). The film makes the case for paying more attention to our trade imbalance with China at a number of different levels.

The Dictator Satire? Meet Cohen. Jacob Sahms
Now on Blu-ray. Will The Dictator change anyone's mind about racism and global awareness? Probably not. But Cohen's sense of humor and world awareness are thought-provoking if you'll let yourself momentarily see the world through his eyes (and maybe ignore some of the more crass additions).
