The Expendables 2 The Expendables 2

Who'd've Thunk?

Yo

Stallone. Willis. Schwarzenegger. Norris. Statham. Li. Lundgren. The list goes on and on, but having a bunch of cool guys doesn't always mean a cool movie. Fortunately, in this case it actually does.

Give It A Chance

Dice

When I was a tween, tweens didn't exist. Now they make whole movies for them. As I understand the audience, though, I think they just think of films like this as filler. Is it possible there is something here even a non tween might enjoy?

Mainstream Media Takes Notice
Doesn't That Make You A Bit Curious?

If you've been following The Pipeline at Hollywood Jesus lately, you've heard about As1 founder Jonathan Bock's claims that Hollywood is changing its tune about the Bible and Christians... and you're probably highly skeptical.

Well, the mainstream press is taking notice and commenting, too. Last Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly wrote the following:

Hollywood is - if nothing else - a land of over-stuffed bandwagons, and as studio suits begin to tire of super-sizing fairy tales, the latest micro-trend in "let's-try-launching-this-kind-of-franchise" appears to be feature films based on the Bible.

The first, director Darren Aronofsky's take on Noah, just recently wrapped filming in Iceland with Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, and Anthony Hopkins. The rest of the Bible-based projects remain in some stage of development without an official greenlight, but many have A-list names hovering around them. According to Deadline, there are two possible films about Moses, with Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg respectively circling the directors' chairs. Will Smith is reportedly eyeing the story of Cain & Abel as his directorial debut. Paul Verhoeven is developing a biopic about Jesus, based on Verhoeven's own book and research, that strips away all the miracles of the New Testament. Most recently, screenwriter Vera Blasi (Woman on Top) penned a script about Pontius Pilate - i.e. the man who condemned Jesus Christ to the cross - that was just snapped up by Warner Bros.

The mag then went on to suggest, in a very tongue-in-cheek fashion some other Scripture-based films that Hollywood might consider producing.

I think it's safe to say that any trend pronounced enough to be mocked is, indeed, a real trend.

The mainstream media are paying attention. Are you?

Yo, Playbox Editor

 Pop-Culture & Christianity Collide

Yo Snyder

Change is in the air.

I'm not just talking about back to school. I'm not just talking about how soon we'll shift from Summer to Autumn. No, I'm talking about a substantial shift in our culture.

I'm talking about the type of change that can define a generation. I'm talking about an intersection of culture and faith the likes of which we haven't seen in generations. It's happening, the only question is, what sort of effect will it have? Well, that may rest entirely in our hands.

To talk about this exciting change that's approaching the world of entertainment, I recently had a chance to talk with Jonathan Bock, president of Grace Hill Media and the founder of movement that hopes the make the most of the coming change.

The Cost of Redemption

Darrel Manson

Redemption carries a cost. The redeemed may not feel worthy of such a price being paid for them. That may be because the cost of redemption is not reckoned through cost analysis and weighing of worth and value, but through love.

Finding God in The Hobbit
08/24/12 |  Commentary, Satire | Comment

As December approaches, The Hobbit will be hitting theaters and the world will get another taste of Tolkien's fantasy works.  As this allegorical author comes to the big screen, pastors are scurrying to make all their spiritual references and stories current with the movies.  The problem: no one has any idea what the movies mean.

Pastor Taylor of Missouri Synod Lutheran has the responsibility of making sure his congregation understands the correlation between the movies and the scriptures.  He has read through the books and still can't make the distinction.  He says, "When Narnia came out it was easy.  You could just point to the most awesome character and say, 'That one is Jesus.'  But with Lord of the Rings, I have no idea what any character stands for biblically."
