More Than a Game

Mike Furches

Knowing I needed to see this movie for review, I decided to watch it with approximately 20 homeless women. I was impressed with the movie as it progressed and especially with the sensitivity, yet reality, of how it dealt with the subject of abortion.

Free Men Free Men

Growth of a Conscience

Darrel Manson

There is so much that divides people. Today we think in terms of red and blue states, divisions of religion (even within American Christianity), divisions of class. Free Men tells us of people who thought not of their differences, but of what they held in common.

Holy Rollers Holy Rollers

M. Scott Foster

The casino culture is everywhere. You see it in the sexual perversity of university campus life. You see it in grandparents that buy RVs instead of investing in their progeny's future. You see it at your job when people twist the truth about loan rates.

Sarah Brock

We hear about celebrities doing good deeds all the time. Some we know about, like Michael J. Fox with Parkinson's Disease and Bono with his work with poverty.

But I bet that you don't know about the big hearts these celebrities below have.

The Hunger Games A Hunger for Hype?

Sharrer & Sahms

How did I not get caught up in The Hunger Games hysteria before today?

Maybe I've tried to distance myself from yet another book series that latches onto a select group of readers and has little lasting value a month later.  When the inevitable movies come out, the fans reveal themselves by showing up for midnight showings, wearing t-shirts with catchy slogans and quoting book passages... sometimes getting into arguments about them.  As a result, adults rush out to the bookstores or log on to Amazon and purchase the books for themselves in droves.

Harry Potter movies are notorious for this.

Twilight movies are notorious for this.

The Lord of the Rings movies are notorious for this.

Steig Larsson's The Girl with... series is also noted for this.

This weekend, Suzanne Collins enters into the fray with the first movie from her immensely popular series The Hunger Games...

As usual, I plan to summarize each of my days' experiences with capsule reviews of the films that I see at SXSW. If something completely blows my mind I may add a full review or an extra piece about it. I also have a couple of interviews lined up that I'll share with the Hollywood Jesus crowd as soon as I can perform and transcribe them!

The Descendants

The Descendants Trouble in Paradise

Nate Watts

Now on Blu-ray. Sounds like a pretty straightforward daytime soap drama, but Alexander Payne keeps you on your toes throughout. There are plenty of bonus features to keep you busy, too, including deleted scenes, making-of featurettes, and commentary.
