  The Bible: Rate It X?
Hollywood Consultant Calls Scripture "Gritty"
    G reg Wright
Pushing back against a Movieguide report suggesting that family-friendly Christian-market films represent the future of biblical-values media, Christian Hollywood consultant  Phil Cooke, President and CEO of Cooke Pictures, sent an email to The Christian Post suggesting that "a Bible movie would quite possibly be given the most restrictive rating of all," according to an article published at the Post this week.
"If you filmed the Bible, much of it would be R-rated and some of it possibly X," Cooke is quoted as saying. "That's the remarkable thing about the Bible--it tells honest, authentic and true stories. So why do we spend so much time trying to convince Hollywood that serious films about real life that push the edge aren't welcomed by the faith community? I think the culture would respect our message much more if we stopped producing just cheesy, G-rated films and started telling gritty stories about real life."

   Undefeated
   Heartbreaking, Breathtaking   Greg Wright
The setting is a less-than-dirt-poor public school, not a private Christian school. But as in The Blind Side, the heroes of this story are fatherless black kids... and white coaches and mentors.

   Good Deeds Brock & DeArmond
A great line in one of the trailers is when she says that he doesn't know what it's like for her, and then asks him if he knows how much a gallon of milk is. When he can't answer, it just proves her point.

Death of a Legend Sarah Brock

On Saturday night, we got the most tragic news: Whitney Houston died. She was forty-eight. Even though Whitney had had problems with drugs, her death still came as a shock to me. A legend was gone.   I knew that they would scramble something together last minute at the Grammys and Jennifer Hudson's performance was very moving. Sean and I loved how she didn't try to hit the high note at the end. By not doing that, she made it more about Whitney.   But I have to really hand it to LL Cool J. He got the audience to pray with him for Whitney's family. That was awesome! That took courage, since Hollywood isn't known for Christianity, but he did it anyway. Way to go! Speaking of prayer, we have to keep Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina in our prayers...

Now on Blu-ray. I have seen Depp's previous Thompson homage, and I just didn't get it. I don't like that film really at all. And yet, this version managed to win me over. I went from being entirely uninterested to engaged and even slightly inspired. Also new... |
