Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

In Search of Reason

Elisabeth Leitch

Tackling an event such as 9/11 through the eyes of child, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close also gives us a character who is not afraid to ask questions and seek answers with an honesty and boldness that most adults rarely display.

Coriolanus Coriolanus

Shakespeare's Play Still Fits

Darrel Manson

Coriolanus is very much a play and film that fits into today's world. As a political drama it is a story of shifting allegiances. It is about honor and betrayal. It is about demagogues and about democracy (both its success and its failures).

Courageous Courageous

"Hollywood South" Heats Up

Greg Wright

"We have wanted to be a blessing to our city and our state," says Producer and Associate Pastor Kendrick, "and I'm grateful that Albany is well known--is becoming known--as the place where the films Fireproof and Courageous were made rather than the location of the flood of 1994 or for being one of the eight poorest cities in the country. So we're grateful for that.

"And there are some great congressional leaders in our state government, and they've been making some good decisions, so I'm grateful to hear that they are helping filmmakers in Georgia."

Man on a Ledge Man on a Ledge

Brock & DeArmond

If Nick is actually innocent then we may be looking at a story about the lengths you sometimes have to go to in the name of truth. If he's guilty, well maybe it's still kind of the same message, but from the vantage point of the people seeking a peaceful resolution.

Sarah Brock Why I Took a Pass on the Globes

Sarah Brock

Last year, host Ricky Gervais made Sean and I uncomfortable. The jabs that he made at celebrities and that one about God at the end made us uneasy. Come awards season, I want to see art celebrated. I'm watching an award show, not a roast, after all.

Now, this may sound like I don't like Ricky, but that's not true. I actually think that he's quite funny and I do respect the fact that he's not a kiss-up. But I feel like more respect should've been there.

On another note, I'm quite pleased that Michelle Williams won an award...

Higher Ground

Higher Ground "Manifesto to God"

Greg Wright

Now on Blu-ray. Do you know what it feels like to be a stranger in a place that ought to be your home? I suspect many of us do... and it's a tragedy. In Corrine's case, she really longs for the "blessed assurance" of salvation that these True Believers have. But... nope.

Mark Sommer Firefly

Mark Sommer

Logic tells me I shouldn't like this show, but I love it. The series' creator, Joss Whedon, is an avowed atheist, and his "worldview" comes out in what he creates. But one does not have to be a believer in God in order to be a genius.

Whedon is also behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Dollhouse, all three of which are favorite shows of my son, Matt. (I have viewed the first episode of Dollhouse, and plan to try to watch the entire series soon. The other two? We'll see.)

One of Whedon's great strengths is the ability to create believable, likeable characters, and the series Firely is a showcase of this skill.
