i.am.first: Science is Rock & Roll
On ABC TV Tonight

Live with will.i.am

Science, Music, and Life!

Will.i.am is well known as the frontman for the popular group The Black Eyed Peas. But that's not all he's known for. His political activism for change during the 2008 election season was groundbreaking... and now he's got a new cause that he's passionate about.

Together with FIRST founder Dean Kamen, he's produced a one hour back-to-school special entitled  i.am.FIRST: Science is Rock & Roll that airs, tonight, Sunday August 14th on ABC, 7 pm, 6 Central.

This special is all about the FIRST program, an organization that inspires young people to achieve goals and to better their education. It accomplishes this by creating a science competition involving young students.

The i.am.FIRST special follows these emerging inventors as they go through the regionals and enter the international Championship.

I recently had a chance to dish some e-mail questions to will.i.am about this new project.

What inspired you to get involved with the FIRST program?

I created this TV special to get kids excited about math and science, using the FIRST Championships and entertainment to help make science and technology cool. When I attended my first FIRST event as a guest of inventor and FIRST Founder Dean Kamen, I was blown away. I asked him why more people didn't know about FIRST. Dean has made FIRST great, but we agreed that my role was to make it loud. One thing led to the next, including taking the BEPs to St. Louis to play a special private concert, which then led to creating the TV special i.am FIRST: Science is Rock and Roll.

L.A. Rising
On July 30, 2011, Rage Against the Machine roared back to life for their first major concert in their hometown of Los Angeles in too many years, and their only scheduled concert for 2011. The venue was the Los Angeles Coliseum, a backdrop of numerous movies, two Olympic games, and located in the diverse metropolis' epicenter.

The LA Rising festival, a concert dedicated to social justice and progressive change lasted nine hours, housed over sixty thousand fans, and included the talent of Mexico's El Gran Silencio, rapper Immortal Technique, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Rise Against, Muse, and Rage.

L.A. Rising"Re-Education Camps" were set up throughout the Coliseum to provide information about these social programs, and videos and commercials filled the gap between sets on the huge dual stage screens.

We'll skip the part where we talk about the ridiculous traffic getting to and from the Coliseum, the overpriced USC parking, and the issues with the GA floor seats being sectioned off into four groups, and skip right to the music...

This Loud Morning

Idol rocker ups the ante

Jacob Sahms | 07/27 | 20 Comments

David Cook's second album post-Idol is stronger than the first one, which had a few catchy songs but was pretty standard outside of those hits. He ratchets up the action in This Loud Morning, a rocking album of introspective proportions, which he drops three years since the last one.

I enjoyed Cook's performances on Idol, as he brought a rock n'roll vibe to his different assignments. Since winning the 7th season of Idol, he's obviously continued to hone his rock sound.

The lead off "Circadian" has a catchy chorus that sounds a lot like the Smallville theme song "Save Me," which in my opinion is never a bad thing...
