Silly Grown Ups, Gaming Is For Kids
Wassat?

From Farmville and Facebook to the iPad and iPod Touch to, of course, Nintendo, Xbox and Playstation, gaming is big business these days. In fact, according to a recent report from the NPD, gaming made over five billion dollars in just the first quarter of this year (including things like rentals, subscriptions, downloads and so forth).

A lot of people are playing video games from all walks of life and at all ages. And yet... somehow the perception persists that gaming is still just for kids, or lonely losers in their basement.

 Check it out...

Really? It's "weird" for anyone over thirty to play video games? Kind of like it's weird to enjoy other forms of media and entertainment like movies, books, TV, music, and the like? Why is there some sort of cut-off for the "appropriate" age to play games? The industry has made great strides in becoming a truly interactive form of story telling, not to mention being a great way to spend time having fun with friends. Was there a certain age at which one had to stop playing board games (which, by the way, looks like the only type of "gaming" these "experts" are probably familiar with)? I just don't know, people.

 What are your thoughts?

Smashing Manhunters Is Fun
Video games that are developed as tie-ins for movies don't have the greatest reputation; and that's because they generally suck. So when a movie tie-in video game comes along that isn't truly awful, well that's something to take note of.
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is just such a game. It's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it's certainly not terrible either. In truth, I had fun with this game, which definitely took me by surprise. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that the game just might be more fun than the movie.

GL: Rise of the Manhunters is a pretty simple game. You spawn constructs to fight Manhunter robots. You do that here, you do that there, you do that everywhere.
These levels are broken up by the occasional flight sequence, a few puzzles and some big boss fights (as in these bosses are really big). Still, it's pretty much the same brawl over and over.
What keeps it interesting is your powers. You have a wide variety of constructs to use from mechs to weapons to jets and so on. It's fun in the same sense that force powers and lightsabers made it fun to do the same thing over and over again in Force Unleashed 2...

Better Packaging For A Familiar Game

Okay, full disclosure. I'm more of Broncos fan than I am a Buffaloes fan (although I did grow up watching Air Force games at the Academy), so when it comes to football, I enjoy the pros more than college football.
That preference also translates into the video game world, where I get far more enjoyment out of Madden football than the NCAA football franchise. Still, the college version of the game has often had some gameplay and other elements that I enjoyed more than Madden (their online Dynasty mode has been consistently superior to Madden's online franchise mode), but I still only play NCAA Football for about a month until the big boys in the pros come along.
Still, I do enjoy the occasional college game, and there's no denying that EA's NCAA Football has been a solid game in recent years, and this year's version looks like it'll carry on that tradition in fine form...
